format conversion - double trouble

Hi,
I am using a Kindle Voyage (latest firmware) and Calibre. After importing a number of pdf-files into Calibre, I converted them in bulk to my default format azw3. After conversion the files contain both the old pdf as well as the new azw3 version. When I then export the files via USB to the Kindle, only the pdf version gets transferred which is unfortunate because my Kindle does not always understand pdfs correctly and I sometimes wish to manually edit the file text, which is only possible with the converted version.
I had to edit each metadata file individually to delete the pdf version as there is no such function available in bulk editing.
Any ideas?

What do you mean "the files contain both the old pdf as well as the new azw3"? calibre converts to AZW3, it doesn't embed PDFs inside the AZW3...

"I had to edit each metadata file individually" -- are you saying the library record had a PDF and an AZW3?

By default, the Kindle device driver does not transfer AZW3, since there are devices that do not support it. So if you only have a PDF and an AZW3, the PDF will be sent when using Send-to-device.

Go to the device configuration dialog (see screenshot) and make sure AZW3 is selected and heads the list for "Select available formats".

I have selected azw3 as the preferred output format. And indeed, Calibre performs as expected - the pdf file is converted into azw3-format without further intervention from my side.
When I click edit metadata, I see both the pdf and the azw3 format displayed in the right top corner(see screenshot)

I have made the recommended selection under "configure this device" and it appears to work! Thank you, shamanNS! Now I have to sift through dozens of files to find those where pdf did make a difference ... I'll be back!

That is normal.
Calibre leaves what you started with and ADDS any conversion.

Conversions do not always go smoothly (say that 1000 times for PDF to whatever)

This way, you get to change a setting or two and give it another go

BTW CALIBRE allows one of Every format in that space (that is a LOT of formats)

Precisely. But - I found the solution to my problem: Under the menu item "Remove Books" there is a subitem called "remove files of a specific format from selected books". Bingo, now I can get rid of the unwanted pdf(s) by individual or bulk process.
Many thanks for your help!
