Smile after update I have half a picture over my screen

I have a 3 year old kobo mini, which has worked well, I charged it on my desktop last night and it started a download update. After the update I have an image on the screen which looks like part of a book graphic .

I cant get to the menu to factory reset as I cant see the top half of the screen for the options. Also I tried a soft reset with a paper clip but nothing happens.. is it time for a new reader? or is there a download online that I can get into this unit.

Can you post a good quality photo of the screen? From your description, it sounds like it's a broken glass substrate, but a pic would help a lot.

Also post what happens to the LED light (the Mini has one, doesn't it?) when you plug it in, try to turn it off and on, etc.

Thank you very much for replying, this is my husbands kobo and yes there are some scratches on the glass, enough that it catches your fingernail and makes a clicking sound as I run my hand over it, so I do believe you are probably right.

I will buy him a new reader, he liked the small size of it as it will go in his shirt pocket, I don't really mind which reader I buy do you have any suggestions, he only reads books that I put on it, nothing else. Do you have any suggestions.

Thank you again for the reply I never would have guessed that was the problem.

I suggest not getting him another 5" Reader of any kind. Putting it in a pocket is going to get it broken. He should be using a cover and with the cover, it won't fit in the pocket. So might as well go for a Kobo Glo HD. I do think he'll like the extra screen space, the higher resolution screen, and the front light.

That would be a very good idea.

I'm sure Willowtreefarm has read our Posting Guidelines (a link is located at the bottom of every page for the convenience of all our members) and understands how helpful a photo would be in order for him to get further assistance on this issue.

The glass substrate is on the back of the display, i.e. within the device, it's not a damage you can see or feel from the outside (other than seeing visual glitches such as curvy black/white on the display along the cracks).

See the 2nd picture in this post: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...83#post2572783 it shows the cracks nicely, although it has next unusually little graphical noise on the front

While it's not nice to have scratches in the display front either, they're not [directly] related to broken glass substrate.
