K3->Voyage: What Calibre features will I lose?
A few months ago, I thought about moving from my Kindle Keyboard (K3) to the Voyage. One of the reasons I didn't was losing the Collections functionality
It's getting harder to resist an upgrade. What other Calibre features would I lose moving to a Voyage? I'm not interested in jailbreaking. Edit: it was Collections, not Plugboard. Last edited by tlc; 08-18-2015 at 09:46 AM. |

You dont lose any calibre features, including plugboards. The kindle collections calibre plugin wont work without jailbreaking, but that's it.

Thanks, you're right. It was Collections, not plugboard.
Side loaded books end up in the books section, right? Not Documents? Can I put side loaded books into "Folders" with the Kindle's (Cloud?) Collections feature? I just want to sort them into "Folders". Syncing is less important. Or does the touch screen UI make a Home Page of hundreds of books less painful? Last edited by tlc; 08-18-2015 at 10:02 AM. |

Collections are folders.
And let's just say I am extremely grateful that my touchscreen Kindle Touch can be easily jailbroken so I can create collections using calibre. ![]() Creating collections using the Kindle's native UI is... possible... but painful. Sideloaded books will continue to show up as books, not Personal Documents (assuming you have set the right option in Preferences ==> MOBI Output from your K3 days). |

Collections ARE NOT directories. There are some differences and the biggest is that to put the same eBook into multiple directories you need multiple copies where you can have the same eBook in multiple collections with only one copy loaded.

Thanks. If I have to use more Kindle/Amazon stuff (like their Collections), I guess my real question is in what ways are sideloaded/emailed books treated differently than Amazon purchased books. I started another thread in the Kindle Forum (citing another post of yours!) before I saw I had more responses here.

Kindle's don't do directories and only collections. And you were incorrect saying that collections are directories. They aren't. Doesn't matter if it's the UI or the filesystem.

Collections visually look like folders, but they are actually "tags" that are associated with a book. The difference is significant in that you can add a book to multiple collections and it will only be physically present on your Kindle once.
