Help...Please !

A friend asked me to put a collection of epubs on an iPad (about 50 or so) and I agreed. I have been using Calibre to convert but not to install on another. Spent about 2 hours one day with no luck...the extra device icons never showed up ...found I was using x86 version instead of X64. Fast forward a month and trying again (another 2 hours) the extra device icon showed up (at least the one called "send to device"" did)not sure about the "device" icon". I tried a shift from top to bottom (blued them out) and then used the "send to device" icon...the wheel spun from 2 to 0 when there were 50 selected when finished I believe it showed a check for all in the main column...thought I did something wrong so I tried again and now I ended up with a check 2 in the main column...(found there were duplicate copies of all the books in the "Calibre Library" in a folder "books")... fast forward a couple of weeks and watched the intro film on the main Calibre page I changed the device from generic to apple and when connected I hope when the person returns the "device" icon shows up and I can drag the books from the "library" to "device" as shown in the demo...Fingers crossed... if that works what is the "send to device" icon used for and why when used did it install into the Calibre Library" ???
I know I'm long winded so ...Many thanks for reading

Send-to-device should automatically connect to attached ereaders and allow you to transfer books, but due to iOS updates it may not work with apple devices. I think it might work for iBooks, but you will still need the iOS Reader Applications plugin.
What app were you trying to send to on the iPad? For instance, Marvin will for sure not work.

Going from generic to Apple only sets the default conversion output profile (which affects conversion image scaling) -- calibre is able to connect to many devices as and when needed.

I suspect you did not actually connect to the iPad.

Have you ever used Connect-to-folder, and perhaps set it to auto-connect at startup?

Thanks for reading and replying
I'm probably not very clear....I'm trying to go from the PC (Windows 7) which has a supply of books he would like to his iPad... I know when plugged in the "send to device" icon came up in Calibre but I don't know if the "device" icon appeared....which is the one I saw the author of the program used in his demo.
Are there any settings I can adjust before he comes back and I spend another afternoon with no results?
Thanks again

A slightly common problem is with 'toolbar cleaning' New Users.

Location Manager on the When device connected' toolbar is the detected DEVICE (what gets shown, depends on the device)

Do you have the iOS Reader Applications plugin installed? If not, sending to an Apple device is already a non-starter.

Is the iPad in question on iOS 8.3 or higher? Then you will need to wait until third-party libraries are updated to work with Apple's changes -- and those changes are incorporated into calibre.
