Coming from Kindle3
Hi,
I own a Kindle3 (keyboard) since a few years now. It does the job for me. I was just wondering if there'd be any good reason to switch for a recent model. From what I've read until now, it seems that the main differences are mainly the contrast (I think about the new paper white), the touchscreen instead of physical buttons (I'm not sure which one I'd like the most frankly), and backlight on some models. I don't really care about surfing on the kindle, because we all have enough smartphone / tablets for it. I don't really know if any of these new specs are worth buying a new one. Am I missing something ? What's your opinion ? Do you like spaghettis ? ![]() |

Yes, the front lit Paperwhites were a game changer. They're not only better for reading in dim light but even better in bright light.
Touch screen is a matter of preference. I resisted but now I prefer a touch screen. But, some prefer buttons on their Kindles and a hand crank starter on their car. |

It is of course a matter of personal preference. But to me the Frontlight alone makes it worthwhile.

I had the Kindle kbrd and left it for a kindle fire, which was the worse thing I ever did. I finally came back to the paper white and I am in love again. I love touch screen so I did not go for the more expensive voyage. But yes to paper white.

Yep, the front lighting is the killer feature. Transforms the readability of the Kindle in most reading conditions (at the expense of a slight loss of contrast in full sunlight).

If you're feeling an itch, definitely give the PW3 a try. I upgraded from a perfectly fine Kindle 4 a few weeks ago and don't regret it at all. I'm not crazy about the touch screen and having to move my thumb to turn pages, but everything else puts it head and shoulders above the older models. The new higher-resolution display is beautiful.

I came from a K3 to a Voyage. Yes, it's worth it. It's not a requirement since the K3 is such a nice Kindle in its own right, but for $119 the jump from K3 to PW3 is massive.

For me, between a Kindle Keyboard and a tablet, I'd take the Keyboard. Between the Kindle Keyboard and a Paperwhite, boom, I'm outta there. |

Touchscreen vs Keyboard is a matter of personal preference, I like the Keyboard better. I don't think the reading experience in well lit environment is better with a pw2 than the kk. cu Andreas |

A few things that might push you toward the PW3, if you haven't decided yet.
- Do you read in bed using the K3 lighted cover? Do you have a partner sharing that bed? If so, the front-lit screen is far less intrusive for the other person. - Do you read on planes? Same thing -- far less intrusive for your neighbors who might be sleeping on that red-eye flight. - Do you make highlights and comments? If so, the PW3 will be FAR superior! Typing, contrary to initial impressions, is far better on the touchscreen. [I say this as a 100+ wpm typist on a real keyboard] - Do you look up words as you read? If so, touching a word in the middle of the page to look it up is far easier than navigating to it with the arrows. - Do you read books with footnotes? Same as above. - Do you read primarily outdoors? In this single use case you may find the K3 to be superior. The touch & light layers slightly degrade the screen outdoors, and I can't help but see the touch layer "dots", at least on my PW1. I thought I'd miss the page turn buttons, but after a few days I really didn't care... it's almost the same. The only real drawback for me is if I'm reading as I get drowsy and am half dozing I tend to have more accidental page turns as my thumb stops hovering over the page so well. :-) |

Although the effect is offset (more than offset, IMHO) by the fact that modern Kindles use an eInk Carta screen, which has much higher contrast (50% higher, according to the manufacturer's figures) than the eInk Pearl screen of the K3.

One thing that has kept me on Kindle Keyboard is the open 3G. I use mine to receive and send email when I am in the country with no internet connection. I actually have several Kindle Keyboards, salvaged and repaired with screens, motherboards and/or batteries from China. I understand that newer Kindles have SIM cards that restrict use to just a few sites. Is this true? Can one take a SIM card from the Keyboard and use it in a PW? I also use the 3G for getting newspapers and books. I was using it during the last couple of weeks to get updates on the Tour de France....
