Where can I get DRM free ebooks and reader ?
Hello
I do not own an e-reader yet. Most of my readings are professional-technical stuff. I have a tablet pc, but I find it uncomfortable for long reads. I do not want to be tied to a single content provider (for example amazon). I want to be able to buy my ebooks from various sources and read them on my ebook. Where can I buy ebooks that can be viewed on any device ? which device can view ebooks from any source ? Thanks Guy Shilo |

Very few books from big English-language publishers are DRM free. If you insist on DRM-free ebooks, you'll be restricted to a few genre publishers and most independents.
So - the first thing you need to do is see if the publishers of the technical books you're most interested in publish their books DRM-free. If they do, any E-Ink based ebook reader will be able to read them, at worst after conversion via calibre. On the other hand, if you are OK with buying ebooks so long as you can remove the DRM, I'd recommend going for the new Paperwhite 3 from Amazon. Apprentice Alf's tools can remove DRM from Amazon Kindle ebooks. (& also from B&N and Kobo ebooks, with more hoops to jump through). |

AFAIK, all eReaders can do DRM-free eBooks.
Commercial eBoks are rather DRMed than DRM-free. By eBook I understand formats like ePub, mobi, etc., but not PDF. |

There's several readily available from Onyx and Boyue. The Boyue T62+ and (upcoming) shine should cover that. DRM free ebooks there are tons listed in other posts 'round this site. Including mobileread's own library. Most would also be free public domain or creative commons. Now, if what you want is DRM-free *commercial* ebooks, you want to look at O'Reilly media for technical stuff, BAEN & Tor for SF&F and lots of indies for romance, SF&F, suspense, & historical fiction. The other approach to DRM-free ebooks is to become acquainted with Apprentice Alf and his tools to turn commercial DRM'ed ebooks into personal DRM-free ebooks. It really depends on what type of books you want. If traditionally published bestsellers or litfic is what you read, Alf is the only way. |

"professional-technical stuff" would contain images...often those images are in color. IIRC eink readers don't support color...yet...
I would agree that becoming friends with Alf is your best bet to remove any DRM. Then format shift to ePub and use that on any reader/app that fits your needs. |

But can I purchase, for example, a book from Amazon without being a kindle owner ? Can I just pay for it, download it, remove DRM and read it on whatever device I want ?
Does Amazon (or B&N) even let you download files not directly to their readers ? |

You can install Kindle for PC and download the files through that. The surest way be being able to download is to have a physical E-Ink based kindle, and then you can download from the Amazon web site to your computer 'for transfer via USB' to that kindle.

Amazon, Nook, and Kobo offer reading apps for Android and iOS. You can read on anything you can install them. If you own a Kindle or use Kindle for PC you can download discrete files to a PC. Kobo and Google let you use Adobe Reader to diwnload files. Nook no longer allows it reliably. All sell a fair amount of DRM-free ebooks, too. |

It works for epub too. I use a Nook HD+ and buy from Amazon. I use Kindle for PC, Calibre with the plugin and strip DRM from everything I buy. I also strip DRM from any epubs I buy too.

And, since I'm running it through Calibre anyway, I can tweak the file so it's optimized for my ereader. |
