Win 7 cannot install calibre

I have been using calibre for a few years. I reformatted my hard drive and downloaded the latest version. When I tried to install it a Windows msg said that the installation package could not be opened.

Thia has never happened before. What could be wrong?

I would suspect that the download package is corrupt.

If it acknowledged it was a 'Installation package', it is not the same problem another user had earlier this week (not knowing what to do with a MSI file)

Corrupt is my #1 guess. This could be from the ISP (cache/filter) or your Antivirus silently fixed a suspect file. Delete that file and use the of the 'secure' Alternates listed below the main download link (stops ISP caching)

BTW 64 bit or 32 bit

This seems to be happening more frequently. Kovid to the rescue with the anti-(bad) cache trick

Agreed - be interesting to know if its a specific location and/or ISP - eg USA/Verizon, UK/Virgin etc.

I am sometimes still seeing windows 7 do the
"This file came from another computer and might be blocked to help protect this computer"
property setting trick

i.e. you have to right click the installer file, go to properties, click unblock
it is more likely to happening chrome or other 3rd party browsers.

but it is erratic, sometime I don't have to do that ???

and it is a sneaky setting, you don't realize it has been applied until your install fails & you then go looking ...

@cybmole - this may help - How to use security zones in Internet Explorer

That implies its IE only, my experience is that its not - I had to adjust something in Internet Security Options to prevent files copied from my FTP Service being blocked.

google chrome has its own big brother tendencies also; it decided last week that it was not safe for me to download something from mega.co.nz, so I had to use IE instead or delve into google options.
and it was a safe" something", just a helpful zip of a previous version spotify installer with a couple of files to trick it out of auto updating ( for those who hate the latest spotify "upgrades" )

i usually get my win 7 calibre updates via chrome - no issues, no objections from MSE / malwarebytes pro, & no need for alternate sites.

Interesting new thing I saw recently, is apt-get for windows. See https://Chocolatey.org -- there is a calibre package. One-line CLI install:
Code:
cinst calibre
Personally I can't stand Chrome, I much prefer Firefox. More extensible, and no overprotective filtering of anything even slightly unknown.

posting to old thread deliberately as it is all relevant and I was involved in previous discussion...
setting up calibre, sigil etc on new clean win 7 64. win 7 fully updated, IE11 and chrome installed.

I am back to seeing both the "this kind of file can harm your computer... "nag in chrome when I try to download calibre .msi from official site, and then also seeing " this file came from another computer and may be blocked.... "which I have to manually undo,

it is annoying because does not regularly happen on my current PC, where i install calibre updates most weeks, & I don't have a record of how I fixed it on that machine.
so is there some "learned behaviour" where chrome/ IE/windows eventually decide to allow and trust the regular update, or do I have to go line by line through browser options to figure what is different on the 2 PCs.
(and I have a suspicion that IE settings have to be tweaked away from default even though I am downloading in chrome )
as this is a new install, all IE11 security settings are at default still, and all I have done with chrome is sign in to sync bookmarks etc.
Chrome should have synced all its options to thsi new PC, e.g. it has my mobileread bookmark & log-ins to hand, but maybe it does not sync some of the download security stuff ?

PS it is not happening only with calibre, I see same behavour with sigil installer not being trusted. that is an exe not an msi so is more likely to trigger warnings.

it would be good to figure out & document what has to be done to a new out-of-the-box windows 7 pc to persuade it to play nice with calibre downloads
