How to remove footer in epubs
I just side-loaded some epubs onto a Glo HD and they all have a big old footer and page number at the bottom. What's the best way to get rid of this?
Can I apply a patch directly to the device? Should I compile epubs in Calibre with custom css? Does Koreader get rid of the footer? I suppose they're is the Kepub format also. I prefer to have the whole screen covered with text and nothing else, not even margins. What's the best way/s? |

Under Reader Settings, there's a checkbox to show header and footer, uncheck that, and install GeoffR's patch, full instructions are here. I usually like the simplified page showing (143 / 412 for instance) and with a much smaller footer area, but you can set it to remove even the page numbers on epubs.

To enable the full-screen option add the following to the device's configuration file .kobo/Kobo/Kobo eReader.conf (with a unix-aware text editor such as Notepad++ if using Windows, don't use Notepad or Wordpad):
Code:
[FeatureSettings] FullScreenReading=true There is no need to patch for this if you are only reading epubs, but if you read kepubs there are patches to fix some problems that occur with kepubs in full-screen mode. Edit: There is some more info in this recent thread. Last edited by GeoffR; 05-04-2015 at 10:36 PM. |

I've really forgotten what does what anymore! Thanks for correcting the info, that's even much simpler than the patch. Although it might be worth checking out the patch for other fixes you might like.

If sideloaded via calibre they'll only be in kEpub format if you used the Kobo Extended driver or the kEpub Output driver.
If you copied them via a file manager then they are in kEpub format if the extension was epub.kepub (or is it kepub.epub). In either case you can tell from the Kobo Library display what format a book is; it will show either EPUB or KOBO EPUB. |

Koreader's initial default is with a mini progress bar at the bottom of the page. Even with that on, it is easy to dismiss. Most epubs include a css that defines margins and such. You can have Koreader ignore that and you can select from a list of css files to be applied. You can make your own to apply the rules you want, and add it to the list.

But there is still always at least one empty line at the bottom. It gets smaller as I decrease the font size, so I assume the device is leaving a space equal to one empty line at the bottom. When the last sentence is very long, the more than one blank line, apparently deciding to continue the long sentence on the next page. When the sentence is four or fives lines long, the gap at the bottom gets very big. Is there anything I can do about this? Last edited by Rizla; 05-04-2015 at 11:03 PM. |

Otherwise, if the space at the bottom of the screen is not tall enough for a line, the space will be left blank. |

As well as widows/orphans settings, the book might have @page margins set in the book's stylesheet or in the html files, or via an .xpgt file.
You can either change the stylesheet before sideloading, (if using Calibre the Modify ePub plugin is useful for removing @page margins and .xpgt files), or there are patches to disable widows/orphans processing and to override the @page margins (including one that makes the epub top/bottom @page margins adjustable, like kepub margins are in full-screen mode.) If there are no @page margins and orphans/widows are set to 1, then with a bit of adjustment of line spacing and font size you should be able to get the text in an epub to go right to the bottom of the screen if you really want to. |

I don't recommend Koreader. It has many interface features but its renderingbad compared to RMSDK.
You cam remove footer with a small effort, no need to abandon RMSDK, it is the best tool to render ebooks we have. |

For the information of others, I solved this via
1) See post #3. 2) I applied the patch here: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=259758 Now I can use the whole screen. Thanks to those who helped. n.b. This was for FW 3.15. don't use that direct link unless your FW is the same version. Last edited by Rizla; 05-07-2015 at 08:49 AM. |

RMSDK might render better, but in my experience the Koreader renders quite good. I never noticed a significant loss of render quality when changing between the stock reader and Koreader.
