Unhappy Calibre 4 - Linux - Load Errors

I just updated from Calibre 3.43(i think) to the latest version but now i appear to be getting load errors possible due to a symlink file.
Code:
calibre-debug -g
Traceback (most recent call last):
File "site.py", line 75, in main
  File "site-packages/calibre/__init__.py", line 23, in <module>
  File "site-packages/calibre/startup.py", line 204, in <module>
  File "site-packages/calibre/utils/icu.py", line 30, in <module>
RuntimeError: Failed to load icu with error: /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libstdc++.so.6: version `CXXABI_1.3.8' not found (required by /opt/calibre/lib/libicui18n.so.64)
The file is there but links to /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libstdc++.so.6.0.19 (im not sure how to find out if this one is the version it requires)

Im using LinuxMint 17.3 Rosa 64-bit (which i believe is Ubuntu Trusty(14)) I have updated all available mentions of GNU that was in my Systems update has shown me at lvl3 is there another dependence i now need to install for this to work as calibre v3 was working until i did the update.

Thanks Taza

Edit: I should prob mention i installed the update using the command line provided in the linux- download page https://calibre-ebook.com/download_linux

As is noted on the linux download page, you need GLIBC 2.18 or higher
and libstdc++.so.6.0.21 (from gcc 5.4.0) or higher to run calibre. This
is approximately three year old software. If your distro does not
provide it, then you should stick with calibre 3.48 until it does.

Instructions on how to downgrade calibre are on the Linux download page

Mint 17.3 is no longer supported so my recommendation is for you to upgrade your OS.

Thanks found out issue after i posted and was unable to remove the question.

As for an out dated OS i was unable to update at the time 18 was released as it conflicted with my motherboard drivers but will look into seeing if that bug was resolved.
