Replacement of beloved Nexus 7 2013?
Since the Nexus 7's are crashing at a huge rate, I want to be proactive and find a replacement. I use mine only for reading, so I need an approx 7" tablet that runs both Calibre Companion and Pocketbook - so I guess Android. NOT Amazon product - travel with mostly no wifi and Amazon's products don't like that.
Also, I need a really bright screen with a really, really white background and black letters. I have an Amazon PaperWhite II (that's why I know it doesn't like traveling with no wifi) and a Kobo Glo - nice little ereader, but the screen just isn't bright enough. Any thoughts? |

I just did the same myself and bought a Note Pro 12.2 I am still charging the beast up and letting it do all it's updates but it's in comparison huge just looking at it the screen looks like three nexus 7's aligned in portrait.
I don't know how comfortable it will be for reading with but the big screen is very pretty looking I think it's going to be great for movies. I wouldn't worry too much about the Nexus 7 issue unless it actually effects you it's hard to tell on the internet how big a problem actually is, for all we know it could be a single batch of them that's having the issue and the rest might be fine. Main reason I switched now is I think lollipop was just too much for the 2012 model. |

I use an ASUS ME572 that I bought from Best Buy. So far it's been stable.
I honestly haven't tried Calibre Companion or Pocketbook. I mainly bought it to use as a reader. It periodically runs on sale for $149. Code:

The question to ask is why your Nexus 7 is crashing. Has it had a firmware update recently? Have you installed a new app that might account for it? It's certainly not a general issue; mine doesn't crash.
Can you explain why you think that Amazon devices "don't like travelling with no wifi"? My Voyage never has wifi turned on and is fine. What downside do you see of not turning on wifi? Last edited by HarryT; 04-20-2015 at 02:37 PM. |

Considering that the N7 is one of the most popular Android devices around, I strongly suspect that the actual percentage of devices that are failing is very low.

No problems with my 2013 N7. I guess this is a case of the minority of people with issues being much more vocal than the majority without.
Having said that, if you want to use it as an excuse to buy a new gadget, why not? I've never needed an excuse myself, I just do it! |

I also have to say I looked at a friends Fire, HDX 3rd gen and it does have a really nice screen - maybe even better than the N7. But I still don't trust Amazon's programmers. |

I'm a big fan of the samsung tablets. I've got an 8.4" tab pro, the Tab S would be really similar as well
8.4 is a great size for reading anything (epub, pdf, cbr, etc) and then you have the added benefit of a proper tablet as well reading mode isn't quite e-ink, but it's a nice option if I had it to do over again, i'd be tempted to get the Note tablet with the s-pen for notations and stuff |

Got myself a Shield tablet.
It have the advantage of having a mostly raw / up to date android. It's bulky and heavy though (due to it being originally for games) but have a huge battery. And yeah, it do have a stylus. |

I've been doing the same thing you are, which is proactively looking for my next replacement. My N7 2013 seems to be doing OK at the moment although occasionally it won't wake up when I open the smart cover and I'm forced to reboot.
The most important feature for me is pixel density since my tablet is primarily my ereader. I will not consider anything with less than 300 ppi. So that leaves me with 2 options: The Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4 and the Dell Venue 8 7000 series. I was hoping I'd like the Dell. The screen is gorgeous and Android is fairly vanilla but the sharp edges would make it hard to hold for hours. That leaves me with the SGT S 8.4 as my only viable candidate at the moment. I'm not a fan of Samsung's hardware buttons but the screen is stunning and the tablet is comfortable to hold. So while I'm keeping my eye on the Samsung for any good deals at the same time I'm watching for new devices in the 7" - 8.4" range with high ppi. |
