Not converting to non-DRM

I've been using Calibre for over a year, installed the DeDRM plugin and it works fine on my main PC. I'm still using 2.0, as it works perfectly well for all that I want it to do, so I haven't found it necessary to update.

I got a laptop PC and installed the latest Calibre (2.20) and then d/l and installed the DeDRM plugin. It shows up in user installed plugins.

But when I try to convert a book (any book, I've tried a few), I get a popup that tells me I cannot convert. I was able to convert the same books on my main PC without any problem.

What is preventing the conversion?

(Both machines are running Win7 Ultimate, 4gb RAM, and dual core 64 bit.)

The DeDRM plugin is a filetype plugin -- those only work during import, not conversion.

If you are trying to convert and you get a DRMError, converting will not help -- as explained in Alf's FAQ: http://apprenticealf.wordpress.com/2...removal-tools/

I'm having a similar problem. I just updated to version 2.2 and now my installed DeDRM plugins do not work on import. I tried to import a Kindle file and when I tried to view it, I got the "this book is DRM protected", so the import did NOT strip the DRM as it used to do. This is happening on 2 PCs where I updated Calibre, one running Windows 7 and the other running Windows 8.1. This has never happened before on an update. Please help. How can I get these plugins to work again. They are all still "enabled" but not working. Help!

Sometimes plugins must be re-installed after updating Calibre. Including the Tools as updates can occasionally bork things. Check with Apprentice Alf to get further advice & assistance.

I've NEVER had a problem with the DRM removal plugin that was related to the updating Calibre.

There have actually been a couple that I can think of:

1. A new version of the tools were required for Qt5 compatibility.
2. There was a change in Calibre a few months ago which meant that adding multiple books to Calibre in a single batch would not remove the DRM from most of them (for Kindle books at least - I don't know if this affected ePub).

New versions of the tools fixed both these issues.

It occurs to me that the second of these issues may perhaps be the one that the OP is seeing.

I didn't have a problem either until the update just before this last one. Then I needed to re-install both the Tools and Obok. Even though I had the latest version somehow it got mangled & stopped working. But a re-install (of the plugins, not Calibre) fixed it.

I tried reinstalling the plugins I had, which did not work. When I tried to get the newest updated tools, the website it was hosted on inserted some adware/malware onto my PC that interfered with my Chrome and IE browsers so I had to clean it up and reinstall Chrome. I am very hesitant now to try to download the new updated tools. Instead, I uninstalled Calibre and reinstalled an older version (v. 1.48) of Calibre and my plugins are working again. I don't know why the newest update of Calibre gave me such problems.

As for 1, as long as you have all of your keys correct, the pre-QT5 version would still work. It was just the UI that bombed on Calibre 2.x.

I did encounter the issue with 2 on pre-2.x Calibre. I had no trouble with ePub in large batches. It was Kindle eBooks that had the problem. I added Kindle eBooks in no more than 5 at a time.

Your problem downloading is not uncommon. Hosting sites often default to using their own download managers for obvious reasons. These are usually Windows executables which don't do anything to speed-up the download, but do show adds and install questionable software. It seems you forgot to untick a check-box which would have allowed you to bypass the download manager.

I've tried all the suggestions given in this thread and I've uninstalled Calibre and the plugins, then reinstalled the latest versions on the new machine. I still get the same pop-up telling me I can't convert, even with new material. On my older PC, with Calibre 2.0 and the old plugins, everything works fine.

(Both machines have the same CPU running Win7 Ultimate)

@jo-ro - can you post an image of pop-up message you get.

If it is a calibre error message, hit the button to copy the message to the clipboard and paste the text here.

Call me crazy, but I haven't heard anything mentioned about configuring the plugin on the "New Machine."

There's software like Kindle for PC and/or ADE to be installed, keys to be generated (or transferred). Even on the old PC with the old plugins, it was never as simple as installing calibre and the plugin, and ... off you go. There's configuring to be done the very first time.

Go to Alf's site and read up on the FAQs and how to post debugging info to the comments section there to get some help. I think you're simply skipping the configuration step(s).

At the very least, open the plugin's configuration dialog and see if the labels on some buttons there seem like they might be logical to click on.
