Finalists: 2015 Hugo Award
http://www.sfsignal.com/archives/201...fiction-links/
Hugo award finalists have been announced. For a second year in a row, a group of people have gamed the nominations. I wasn't planning on purchasing a membership this year, but I'm considering to pay my fees so I can vote "No Award" for a large block of the nominations. |

Yes, the hugos have been gamed and are now worthless. HAve a look at these three links for information on the gaming of the Hugos.

The group "gaming" them suggest that they actually didn't have best quality in recent years. And the group who was controlling them did seem to have certain extreme tendencies and corruption... Is this true?

Wow, the sad puppies have really succeeded in ruining it for everyone. Round of sarcastic applause.
I doubt I'll be bothering with a supporting membership this year. I really want to read the Goblin Emperor, but I guess I'll just buy it the old way. I already own Ancillary Sword, and I've already read Lines of Departure (which I liked, but not as much the first one.) From a quick glance, the other categories stink, and I dont think I want to clutter up my TBR with all that garbage. Ekaros: The Hugos have never been "controlled". They are open to anyone willing to pay for a Worldcon membership, as is clearly demonstrated by this shortlist. This is just a way that these people can cast themselves as oppressed victims to rally support. Sure, I didn't think Redshirts was that great, either, but this is so far from being the answer. Ugh. |

These new-fangled writers leave a lot to be desired.
Butcher's just a guy who continues to rewrite his character's adventures, churning them out one after another like a robot on oily drugs. Anderson had somethin' or other to do with Herbert, didn't he? Doggone it! Doggone it all! Why isn't Edmond Hamilton, Clifford D. Simak, and Jack Williamson on the list? Someone said they were dead, but I don't buy that crap. That's no excuse where I come from. Give me the good old authors of yesteryear, when science fiction made sense and reading was fun - where no astronaut had to use the bathroom. AND YOU RECOGNIZED THEIR NAMES! That's what I'm sayin'. That's kinda my thought as well. I had no idea he was nominated, but was actually doing some googling yesterday to find out more about him, seems a hack to me.

Everyone raved about Leckie's previous novel, and I read and loved The Goblin Emperor before it was a Hugo nomination. I'm not saying the Hugo's not being gamed (or that it doesn't suck that it is), but the fact remains that there ARE some worthy nominations this year (and every year). There's never going to be a consensus that the shortlist had all the books/authors it SHOULD have had regardless. If you care about the award (and in all honesty, I can't say that I really do), I'd say the best course of action would be to continue to vote for works you find worthy (based solely on their own merits) and ignore the campaigning. If you find nothing of merit ... so be it. That's a valid vote, too.
Just vote for works (if you can)--not for or against campaigns/slates--and everything will straighten itself out eventually. Or it won't, and the Hugo will become a footnote. Which wouldn't be the end of the world (or even the end of SFF). Last edited by DiapDealer; 04-05-2015 at 09:35 AM. |

I read many of these authors unlike previous years so I am satisfied. Good to see Baen better represented.

900 votes to nominate. 6000 voted last year. Anybody willing to pony up $50 votes. Meh. Let them whine and fight. Use the time to read something fun like FIRST CONTRACT or LIVE FREE OR DIE. Especially the latter; Hamilton would be proud of that one and the sequels. Modern Space Opera with humor, style, and good science. (I'm rereading it now. Still getting laughs from the MAPLE SYRUP WAR segment.) I've read Butcher. Competent. Hardly Hugo Worthy compared to the Andersons, Vinges or Nivens of the past. Preferred the show, though. |

The Hugos have been all about internal politics for years. It's nothing particularly new. SF&F has been somewhat cliquish for quite a few years. I went to Worldcon way back in 1986 when it was in Atlanta (dang, has it really been that long?) It was a really interesting experience, but more to the point, people talked about how political it was back then. I'm thinking that I can already guess which novel is going to win, not because I've read them all and can say which is best, but based on the subjects of each and which is the most politically correct.
