Culture Worrier: Selected Columns 1984–2014: Reflections on Race, Politics and Social Change by two-time Pulitzer Prize recipient (1972 for journalism & 1989 for commentary) Clarence Page (Wikipedia) with a foreword by political commentary news anchor Chris Matthews (Wikipedia) is his career-spanning best-of collection of Exactly What It Says In The Title, covering not just the titular topics throughout the decades, but also life, the universe, and everything pop culture & family & new media & personal stuff, free courtesy of publisher Agate's Bolden imprint.
This is a fairly nifty-looking and substantial volume (nearly 500 pages), and apparently it's being promoted now because if you happen to be located in or planning to visit Maryland and/or Chicago, there's some sort of author appearances coming up in May and June. Currently free, probably just until the weekend @ B&N (may also drop in the UK), Amazon (not available to Canadians, but also free in the UK), and directly from the publisher's webcatalogue page (DRM-free PDF available worldwide), where you can see the upcoming events involving the author. And this has been the (late!) selected 3rd (non-repeat) free ebook thread of the day. Because recent-historical-period-spanning columns on life, the universe, and everything assorted political science and societal topics by a knowledgeable someone who got a prize for doing them. It's like getting edutainment Relevant To My Interests™ ![]() ![]() (Well, okay, most "edutainment" is relevant to my interests anyway, or I wouldn't be classifying it as such instead of a tedious slog of "meh" and "whatever".) Enjoy! Description Pulitzer Prize-winner Clarence Page is one of the most highly regarded syndicated columnists in the country, and his newest book, Culture Worrier, commemorates the 30th anniversary of his column's first appearance in the Chicago Tribune. It is the first such collection of his columns, and a long overdue archive of his best work, covering topics such as politics, social issues, pop culture, race, family, new media, prominent figures, as well as his own personal life. Page has been a broadcast mainstay for decades, delivering his sensible and balanced perspective on The MacLaughlin Group, NewsHour with Jim Lehrer, NPR's Weekend Edition, MSNBC's Chris Matthews Show, and many other popular shows. His column, which is featured in over 150 newspapers, provides keen and clever insight on the day's most pressing political and social issues. While Page is known for his liberal-leaning views, his readers have always appreciated his unbiased approach in directing criticism across the political spectrum, to any individual person or general issue deserving of examination. Culture Worrier is one of the most important column collections in recent years, bringing Page's unique perspective and wealth of knowledge to the foreground of our ongoing national dialogue. As a veteran media member who has lived through the transition from print's heyday to modern mobile publishing, from the Vietnam War through the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, and from the Civil Rights movement to the election of Barack Obama, Page is one of the most significant commentators of our time. |
