Favourite Anime... that you would recommend

While going over the Favourite Movies thread started by RickyMaveety I've seen quiet a few recommendations for Anime films.

While everyone may not be fond of Anime , there are quiet a few great Anime series. I'm more familiar with older series then more recent stuff as I don't have cable at my current place so I though I might drop a few names and see anybody find them interesting and get some recommendations for new stuff that I really should watch watch.

One thing is that I generally prefer Subtitles to the Dubbed version, as I feel that even when the subtitles are funny, or not done very well, you do get better idea of the characters in the original language.

I've always been fond of Rumiko Takahashi work, though I do prefer the manga in some cases.

Ranma 1/2 is classic Slapstick situation comedy, but not something you can take very seriously. Its good for a few laughs. One caveat that the Manga is tons better, and the characters ar somewhat better developed there.

Urusei Yatsura is similar in some ways but does explore some issues a little bit more seriously at times.

InuYasha is standard fantasy, with comedy elements thrown in.

I'm also very fond of Masaki Kajishima's Tenchi Muyo series.

The OVA series explores quiet a few different issues, and the the others are also a lot of fun. Though keeping track of continuity between the different series is quiet impossible at times.

CLAMP Gakuen Tanteiden, better know as CLAMP School Detectives is also a good series, a bit childish at times, but still sweet.

Ghost in the Shell is a Classic in my opinion and a definite must see.

Hellsing is also a definate must see, thought it is quiet gory so be warned.

Slayers is another classic, and the amount of material present can lead to months of entertainment. The difficulty can be getting a hold of all the different series.

Lost Universe by the same creator is also interesting, but does seema bit derivitive at times.

Sister Princess is another sweet series, very girly in some ways, but still enjoyable by all.

Ah! My Goddess - Love the manga and the original 5 Episodes and the Movie were great. Have not seen the complete series, but am lookinng forward to doing so. Its Spin off Series, The Mini Goddesses is hilarious and worth a see, but keep in mind that a lot of will nat make sense until you read the Manga or see the original series.

Love Hina, again a good slapstick comedy, one which does however deal with serious issues quiet often.

Kazemakaze Tsukikage Ran - Interesting series about a female samurai in medieval Japan. If you enjoy that era, then

Rurouni Kenshin also known as Samuri X is a must see. Qhiet bloody at times, especially the original japanese version as opposed to the dubbed american release, it is still a very intresting and deals with that era of history quiet well, not being black or white, but lookinng at the different shades of grey.

No mention of anime can get away wiyhout a mention of the grandaddy of Macross.

Macross Zero was good, but also some what confusiing, especially if the only version of macross you are familer with is the version in Robotech. However the Fights are superb, and the story intresting so worth a look.

New Getter Robot, the remade version of the original Getter Robot is not bad, but I do miss the original version that was part of the Force Five Time slot on TV.

Dragonball Is alway there, but went on for too long IMHO.

I would recommend Neon Genesis Evangelion over pretty much any anime, it's still the most intelligent and fascinating anime that I've seen.

I really enjoyed the 2 Standalone Complex seasons for Ghost in the Shell, along with the movies. The 2 S.A.C. G.I.T.S. are even closer to the books than the movies.

Another scifi classic with a western twist is Cowboy Bebop, with it's amazing soundtrack (jazz !).

Right now I'm watching Mushishi, which reminds me a lot of Miyazaki's Mononoke Hime.

If you're into tales or mythology, Juuni Kokki (The Twelve Kingdom) is a very good show, heavily influenced by Chinese mythology.

Monster, adapted from the manga created by Naoki Urasawa, with it's intricate story and dozens of characters would be suited even for those of you who don't normally watch anime but enjoy psychological thrillers.

I also watch a few shonen, One Piece with it's universe full of wacky characters would be my favorite.

I do not watch so much anime since for me it is missing some dimension (like a coherrent plot or emotional engagement :-) But I thought Lucky Star series was absolutely briliant. It was conversation based and had a kind of humor that suited me perfectly. And it did not have any silly plot that disturbed the good things...

The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya was also pretty good.

Any other series to recommend for people liking the two series above?

Bah! Anime is a tool of the Debil! Da Debil I say! And as such I would NEVER make a recommendation.

Such as recommending:

Tokyo Godfathers: On a Christmas Eve, three Tokyo homeless -- mid-aged alcoholic man Gin, high school runaway girl Miyuki, and former drag queen Hana -- were searching dumpsters and trash bags for possible Christmas gifts for themselves, when cries from a baby drew their attention. Believing this was a gift from God, Hana, who couldn't have a baby of "her" own, vowed to take care of the abandoned baby girl and together they began searching for baby's mother.

or a series like:

The Irresponsible Captain Taylor: Justy Taylor has no training, no skill, no initiative, or leadership qualities; in fact, he has nothing going for him except one crucial thing: dumb luck. This is his only saving grace, and it saves him from impossible odds, time and again. By sheer accident, he rescues the General's beloved granddaughters; for which, the General is extremely grateful, and as such, makes this inept recruit a full Captain, but gives him command of the lowliest ship in the fleet, the Soyokaze. This ship has a crew of misfits and mutineers, so the General is not at all worried about Tylor making matters worse. He has killed two birds with one stone: he has given this inept freeloader a 'reward' for saving the granddaughters, and also put a captain in command of a ship and crew he would just as well see engulfed by a black hole. Thus, Taylor begins an adventure that takes him from the lowest and highest positions of authority, from which he somehow manages to make things turn out for the best.

Justy Ueki Taylor thought a career in the United Planets Space Force would give him an easy life: enlist, get a desk job, spend the rest of his life in quiet, boring comfort. No sooner does he take the qualifying exam than war breaks out with the Raalgon Empire, and circumstances quickly conspire to land this volunteer off the street in command of the cruiser "Soyokaze." Now Taylor faces two uphill battles - against the Raalgon fleet that wants to kill him, and against his own crew, who expect him to conform to some standard of military discipline. But as the war rages, Taylor's easy-going ways might have a better chance of converting his crew than vice-versa.

Or for those looking for a combination of romance and comedy:

Fruits Basket: Tohru Honda is 16 year old orphaned girl who gets invited to live in the house of her classmate, the handsome boy Sohma Yuki, and his cousins, 16 year old Kyo and 27 year old Shigure. However, these young men and parts of the rest of their family (both close and distant) hold a curse; if they are hugged by the opposite gender, they transform into animals of the Chinese Zodiac. Everyday is an adventure for sweet Tohru, as she gets to know everyone in the large family better (especially Yuki and Kyo), in both common and bizarre situations. But, the Sohma Family curse is certainly no laughing matter... it also holds horrible cruelty and heartbreak.
Yes, you'll never catch me recommending anime.
