NY Times with E-ink Device

Hey Guys,

I'm in the market for an e-reader/e-ink device, although the biggest bump in the road is that the NY Times subscription isn't non-tablet friendly. I've heard the best work around is using Calibre for a work around.

I wanted to get an idea of some things before I make my purchase, which hopefully you guys can help me out with.

1. Are certain kobo/kindle models more preferable for Calibre?
2. How long/annoying is the process to upload the daily articles?
3. Is Calibre Mac friendly?
4. Should I be concerned about anything long term, such as NY Times removing Calibre support/access?

Any advice or information is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Dino

Another option would be to run the NY Times app on an E-ink android tablet. I run it on my Onyx Boox Afterglow 2 and it works reasonably well. It also works quite well as a reader.

Calibre is very mac friendly. I use it with a Voyage & Paper White. I have it 'fetch' the NY Times each Sunday and e-mail it to my Kindle.

One gets the most New York Times options with the Kindle, especially if you mostly reside in the US. All eInk models will work fine for this.

The New York Times Latest News Blog for Kindle includes everything on the front page, and a few selected features and sports stories, for $1.99 a month. I think the editor does a good job of making sure that the best non-opinion content, including magazine stories, gets included. This book review was on yesterday:

In the US it is updated over cell phone networks (AKA whispernet) every two hours or so. My only complaint is that overseas, you have to pay a ridiculously high additional $4.99 a week to get it downloaded over cell phone networks. However, if you don't pay the extra fee, it will download when in WiFi range.

I think the answer has to be yes. They do change their free and low-cost access options over time. Anyone remember Avantgo?

If you don't pay too much money for the device, then the disappointment over off and on pay walls would be less. One option is the original Kindle, which Amazon sells in like-new condition (could be perfectly new) for US$50.72. The minuses are slightly slow page turns, no WiFi, and cell phone network coverage that is always free but US-only.

My favorite model, the Kindle Keyboard 3G, seems (I hope temporarily) out of stock as a like-new Amazon warehouse deal. But you can pick up one from ebay.

Current models mostly have built-in reading lights. And if the screen cracks -- possible if, like me, you are a bit clumsy and take the device with you everywhere -- Amazon will probably honor the one year warranty on brand new devices.
