Spam reporting privileges

With the sudden attacks of spam that some sub forums suddenly. Would it be possible to give some trusted regular sub forum users higher privileges to report spam than currently.
I can report 1 new topic as spam have to wait 4 minutes before I can message again. I get the moderators don't want to get inundated with spam reports but giving some regular users higher privileges to report spam will help.

Our members are the safety net for spam, and the spammers (bless their scurrying little rodent legs) don't seem to realize that.

Their feces don't last long, I can tell you that.

Very often it is all one spam poster posting dozens of threads. Report one thread, and as soon as an MR mod deletes it they will ban the spammer as well... and delete all the other threads as well.

I usually add a short message listing the other thread locations, for convenience... probably not necessary.

(Or I delete the thread myself if it appears in the Kindle forums.)

This morning the infestation is particularly bothersome.
Could you make me (and other long-time members) a junior moderator - with ability just to delete this kind of crap? A long-time moderator could then review our changes and possibly revert them so nobody can misuse their power [for longer period]

How do you differentiate the crap? It is possible to make people have moderating powers on a per-forum level, without being able to ban etc. -- but that means you could delete anything, crap or not.

Some forums require you to have so many posts before being able to create new threads. Sometimes that is useful and sometimes frustrating.

The deletion would need to be approved by a trusted moderator within XY hours or even minutes to be permanent. Few long-time members would want to risk bannig for wrongful moderation of a post that doesn't deserve it.
You could also limit the power of moderation of junior staff to posts by users that have registered in the last XY days.
EDIT: Deleting power could also depend on the number of posts the thread has. Spam threads often have only one post.

Most of spam I saw this morning was very balant. And every single second it spends on a frontpage of Mobileread makes it worthwhile for spammers to try harder.
Mobileread is a high-visibility forum with very high Google ranking so getting on our frontpage is very desirable for spammers.

The question is, can you actually configure the forum to work like that? Per-forum junior moderating powers are a fairly common usage, and baked in. What you are proposing sounds like it might require extending the forum software first.

I see ...
In the meanwhile a spam-bot or perhaps a human slave labor somewhere is hard at work polluting our front page with large number of spam posts.

Sheesh. At this point it might need to be first post moderation I'm a back up to do that on several yahoo lists (remember them < g >?).

They're flexing their muscles on another forum I'm subscribed to, also.

Well, the good news is, it stopped.

And someone has probably written some new filtering rules to further harden the spam filters against whichever approach was used there.

It is desirable to have moderators spread around the globe so there isn't a gap in coverage.

This last attack (may I use that word?) occurred after midnight EST when few, if any, mods are available. The Americans and European are probably asleep. However, in Australia, New Zealand and Asia it's the middle of the afternoon and someone there may have been available to remove the spam.
