Unhappy Scribd and Canadian subscribers

Scribd must have made some changes. Suddenly, a book I was in the middle of reading is 'not available in my country'.

I pay my subscription through PayPal, and the billing address with PayPal is to my Canadian credit card. I don't know how Scribd knows my geographic location...actually, I am physically in the U.S. at the moment and I have been here all winter. The tech support person who responded to my e-mail assumed I was in the U.S. So it's not an IP address thing.

Apparently all books by Penguin are not available to Canadian subscribers. A couple of times in the past two days this has happened--I come across the title of a book I am interested in, and Scribd has always been the place I check first. Not available in my country.

I hear the clock ticking on my subscription...between the app freezing whenever my device is connected to the internet, and now this...

I've heard a similar complaint recently from the UK.

I've contacted them about this, as this has been a new development for me. I had been a happy subscriber for nearly a year (until the last 2 updates, when the app started lagging and freezing constantly).

I am also annoyed with doing a search and having books that aren't available showing up with the 'not available' banner across it. It's annoying and kind of feels like a slap in the face. I would rather have the title not show up at all than the air of having someone thumb their nose at me by telling me that some people can view the book but I can't.

(I do realize it's not personal and no one is trying to thumb their noses, but I feel annoyed when I see those search results, especially when I have only come across this in the past week. Whatever change Scribd made, it's disappointing. They may soon lose me as a customer. The only reason I was tolerating the buggy app was that I liked their book selection.)

One of the people commenting on this website:

Said this:

Scribd is available to non US readers ( which is not true of most subscription options). However, not all of the books are available overseas. Harlequin is not available everywhere. And how does it determine location? By the networks accessed by your device. So theoretically if you took your US tablet to Europee for a few months, you could find your Scribd books changing.
I've been in the U.S. for the past 4 1/2 months, so I don't know how this could be.

Have you asked Scribd what's going on? They're the only ones who can really answer your questions.

Yes. I also asked how they determine what country a subscriber is in. There is nowhere in the account settings where a person can indicate that other than the billing address. They don't have a billing address for me because I use my Paypal account.

Just heard back from Scribd. They are going by the billing address from my PayPal account.

I'm kind of stuck with things as they are, apparently.

So...heads up to Canadians, you might find yourself without access to certain titles. This isn't Scribds' fault, but it's rather unpleasant having it 'in my face' when I am browsing through the book selection.

Books with "unavailable " banner are no longer showing up on my Scribd page, and the one I had been reading when it suddenly developed that banner is now no longer in my library. It looks like Scribd did something to bring that about, which I think is a good thing. They are a company that is very responsive to feedback.
