eBOOKS FOR KOBO?

Has anyone heard of this store? and Used it to purchase books?

The pricing seems fine, and I can use Air Miles Cash to make the buy..

The question is will these books work with our Kobos?

https://enthrillbooks.com/

anyone?

They don't seem to want to tell us. The FAQ does have comment on downloading the correct format for the device or app and a suggestion to login and download the correct format. The downloading page also lists the Kobo ereaders with some very generic instructions for it.

This is a Canadian site with a business model which involves purchasing ebook "gift" cards in physical stores. You buy a card with a code which allows you to download either a paricular book or to utilise a credit to purchase a book from their site. There are credit card facilities available which the faq suggests are for paying the difference between your credit and the book you want. It appears accounts are only intended for people living in Canada. You can download books in epub or mobi formats. They give instructions to download and then sideload book files to various devices. They do not provide their own reading application, nor is any mention made of Digital Editions or Overdrive. Although their terms and conditions specifically refer to DRM their sideloading and downloading instructions do not cater for it. Perhaps this is an unpleasant surprise to be discovered when you download a book. I can see, for instance, that you may then find you require Digital Editions for EPub Books, though I am not sure how they would cater for mobi books with DRM.

Finally, I am not sure if they cater for buying books without purchasing a physical card.

They're doomed.

You can't make it that hard for people to throw money at you and survive.

Unless their prices are significantly better than everyone else's. And Canada still has Agency, thanks to Kobo.

@murg. I agree they are likely doomed. It is one of those good ideas in theory which founders in practice. They are chasing a market who shops in physical stores, perhaps sees a physical book and wants the ebook. They are hoping that the person will effectively buy the book then and there in the form of one of their cards and go home and download it. I suspect a more likely scenario is that the person sits down, orders a coffee, connects to the shops wifi and downloads the book to their device with a click or two.

Your quote from their terms and conditions is horrifying, and there are other similar provisions. I particularly liked:
Upon closing of your account, or change of ownership of a reading device, all titles received from Enthrill must be deleted from your device(s).
No thank you.

I looked at this site and the books that they have are not really any cheaper than Kobo, iTunes or Amazon. They seem to be making it very hard to buy from them. Am Canadian and would not use these guys.

seems to me if you buy a book you own it. Buying implies ownership. IF it said you rent the book for the lifetime of the company or through a set time, then I could understand deleting the book.

Don't buy eBooks from Apple. They caused agency to come to be. Apple deserve to make no money on eBooks. Don't even mention Apple and eBooks in the same post with Kobo and Amazon. Or For that matter don't mention Apple and eBooks ever.

They list books on their front page that are clearly only available from the drm enthralled publishers, but their sideloading instructions are for generic epub/mobi documents. This has all the earmarks of a very expensive and elaborate pirate site.

(If I find indication that I am wrong, I would be first in line to be their customer.... legit direct epub download from mainstream titles...... funny how it's here and I haven't even heard of it.)

Edit: Looks like I was wrong,, Harper Colins is indeed dipping their toes in DRM free (or, should I say, Social DRM) waters. This is great news for canadians.. the purchase and download of a book was as effortless as any other e-book store. Of course, no device syncing for those who need that, but I like this site much better than Kobo,,, (except for the limited selection, of course.)

Edit2: The following text is inserted as the first and last page of the book I purchased:
There might be other watermarking.

Thank you for your purchase of Death Mask!

We bet you can't wait to get reading!

By purchasing this book through your local bookseller you are given special privileges that you don't typically get through in-device purchases. For instance, we don't lock you down to any one device, so if you want to read it on another device you own, please feel free to do so!

There is a bit more info about it here, but no detail on the watermarking method they are using: http://www.enthrill.com/

It looks like a good alternative to me, they just need to get some of the big publishers on board.

The statement also seems to be implying that the book is in fact free of DRM. Direct download of drm free epubs with an express permission to read on other devices (and an implied one to convert the file to do so if necessary)? That would be a step in the right direction. But can it simply be an online store, or must a card be purchased from a bricks and mortar store? Which stores have these cards? And those terms and conditions remain terrible, irrespective of whether they are actually enforced.

It looks like they are using PackaDRM for watermarking.

Some of their prices are out of whack majorly.

Waking the Dead By Heather Graham
Enthrall: $21.99
Google Play; $4.99

French Pastry Murder by Leslie Meier
Entrall: $21.25
Amazon: $9.14

And there are plenty of more examples of this.
