Whiplash River by Lou Berney (SYKM) is the 2nd in his series of humorous crime capers starring a former criminal attempting to reform and become a chef, if only it weren't for all those pesky people pulling him in just when he thinks he's gotten himself out, this installment involving some debts gone bad which put the protagonist on an increasingly zany run for his life, free courtesy of publisher HarperCollins' William Morrow imprint.
This was a double finalist for the Anthony & Edgar Awards for Best Paperback Original Novel, and the 1st in series, which we've previously gotten free a number of years ago, in case you wanted to check your archives: Gutshot Straight, was itself a 2011 Barry Award finalist for Best First Novel, according to SYKM. Currently free @ B&N, Amazon & Kobo & iTunes (none available to Canadians), and probably also Google Play if you're in the US. And this has been the (late!) selected 3rd (non-repeat) free ebook thread of the day. Because award-nom zany madcap reformed pulled-back-to-criminal caper with attempted going-straight chefs in it (reminds me of a Lasse Spang Olsen movie which I watched a couple of weeks ago, which was really, really funny, and amazingly had the DVD commentary subtitled in English, which is exceedingly rare), which happens to be a sequel to another freebie we were previously offered, so we can keep on with the series if we liked it for free (assuming no follow-up purchases from the first, and we have a US account or can convincingly fake it). ![]() Also, Happy Lunar New Year of the Sheep/Goat/some kind of caprid* to all! Enjoy! Description Having left his life of crime behind, former getaway driver Charles "Shake" Bouchon has finally realized the dream of owning his own restaurant in Belize. Unfortunately, to do so he's had to go deep in debt to a murderous local drug lord named Baby Jesus. And when Shake thwarts an attempted hit on an elderly customer named Quinn, things go from bad to worse. Next thing Shake knows, his restaurant's gone up in flames and he's on the run from Baby Jesus, two freelance assassins, and a beautiful but ferocious FBI agent. Out of options, Shake has to turn to the mysterious Quinn for help. Suddenly Shake's up to his neck in a dangerous score that he'll never pull off unless he can convince an even more dangerous ex-girlfriend to join him. * My government officially says "Goat", but the festive cuddly toys in the local Asian supermarket look like "Sheep". Apparently this confusion is global, according to CBC's article on it. I hope they switch it up with "antelope" at some point, since apparently that's also an option. ![]() |
