Something like Campbell's Lost Fleet series?

Scifi isn't something I have read a lot of (I usually go for fantasy, historical adventure, and spy/hard/polit-thrillers), but I just swept through Jack Campbell's Lost Fleet, Beyond the Frontier, and Lost Planet series, and I really like the books.

I'm looking for something that is similar, though wouldn't mind a stronger focus on exploration (new species, etc.). Hmm, maybe something between his books and the Stargate:SG1 TV series?

Try the Starfire series by David Weber and Steve White. The first four books in the series are in The Stars at War Vol 1 and Vol 2

For some reason I thought Crusade, book 1 of the Starfire series, was available in the Baen Free Library, but I don't see it now. On Basilisk Station is there though which is the start of the Honor Harrington series. I haven't read the Starfire series, but the HH series is excellent.

The Kris Longknife series by Mike Shepherd might work for you. The later books in the series are about exploration.

You might like Genellan series by Scott Gier the first book--Genellan: Planetfall--is in the Baen Free Library, and the rest are reasonably priced at Amazon.

Spoiler:
Quote:
Genellan—a beautiful, Earthlike world where intelligent cliff dwellers waited in fear for the day the bear people would return, killing them for their fur . . .

Genellan—the only refuge for a ship's crew and a detachment of spacer Marines, abandoned by a fleet fleeing from alien attackers.

Stranded on Genellan, the humans struggled to make a home for themselves until—they hoped against hope—the fleet would return to rescue them. Lt. Sharl Buccari tried desperately to hold on to the threads of command over the spacers and the Marines—to keep her crew together and alive.

Winter was coming. No one knew if the winged natives would be friend or foe. And now the bear people were returning, intent on destroying the humans—but not before stealing the secret of hyperlight drive, the key to interstellar flight . . .

You might like Fredrik Pohl the Heeche saga.

Basically - humanity has discovered an abandoned alien base with space ships. They don't understand the controls but they seem to be able to set a destination, fly the ships out and most of the time - fly the ships back.

There is a lottery and Earths poor (the usual food source of the Lotto) fight for a chance to man a ship out and back. The crew who discovers something valuable, share in the profits & become rich.

It was a novel that grew into a 5 book series, but not designed as a series.
