First letter in chapter should be large and bold - it is not.
I downloaded an epub book from the library and the first letter font of each word in the beginning of the chapter is large and bold (Adobe editions).
However when I transferred it to the kobo touch to read, the first letter is the same size as the rest of the text and only offset. It looks like a font formatting issue that it can't display two different font sizes. Is there a way to correct this? or just one of those things to live with? |

With library books you really just have to live with it.
If you buy the book yourself you could remove the DRM and edit the book's stylesheet to fix the problem. |

Care to share the name of the book so others can investigate?

In ADE, does the first letter appear to be a different font than the rest? If so, it probably means the font is on the PC but not on the device. Adding the font might fix it, but it also needs the code in the book to be correct. If we could see the book, or the code in it, we might be able to work out what is happening. |

You could also try the Elfstones of Shannara, or The Wishsong of Shannara. They will be of the same format.

I have The Sword of Shannara and it displays just fine on my H2O. Well, not fine, the publisher left out

Flick followed the familiar trail with his eyes as he trudged wearily along, his light pack slung loosely over one shoulder. His broad, windburned face bore a set, placid look, and only the wide gray eyes revealed the restless energy that burned beneath the calm exterior. This is how it appears in my copy. The entire book is in a "main.css" file. Not setup as a Dropcap. Appears in Koreader as bold but in the line above, not where it should. Luck; Ken |

Could be, I'm not sure where I got that file. But whatever the source, the issue seems to be related to figuring out why when viewed in some readers, like the one with calibre, the first word of the first paragraph of each chapter begins with a larger bold capital letter, but the same file, when viewed on the device, displays the first word otherwise.
The same formatting code in the epub produces different results, in the different readers. So, it would seem that the problem is in how the different reading software handles the formatting code in the epub. Since at least one of the readers is displaying it in the expected manner, the fault is not in the epub file. Luck; Ken Last edited by Ken Maltby; 02-13-2015 at 10:36 AM. |
