Simple Touch - Photographic Memory

I've used my NOOK Simple Touch daily for several years. Never rooted it but I've learned a few of its quirks.

Here's something you can do to maximize your use of the memory available. When you connect your Simple Touch to the computer you will notice a file called .docThumbs. The NST makes a copy of the cover image of each book loaded onto it. It uses these images for thumbnails displayed on the library shelves, and stores those images in .docThumbs.

The problem is that when you delete a book from the NST the corresponding thumbnail cover image IS NOT deleted from .docThumbs. So, unless you open the folder and manually delete them, your NOOK is storing a copy of the cover of EVERY SINGLE BOOK you have EVER had on the thing!

Now epubs can be very small, memory-wise, and a .jpg cover image can easily use as much memory as the rest of the book. So if your NOOK is filling up (especially w/o a memory card) try pruning you cover collection in the .docThumbs folder. You might be surprised at how much memory you can free up.

By the way, the NOOK seems to look for a file called "cover.jpg" (or cover.something, anyway) to use for the thumbnail image. If your book uses a cover image with a different name, you won't get a thumbnail picture on your library shelves, just the blank white rectangle with the title and author.
