Metadata: Calibre to Adobe
I'm a long time user of Adobe Digital Editions, which I use with my Kobos. I have a large library of books in various places (depending on origin) on my computer, most of which have been added to the ADE library.
I just spent the best part of an afternoon re-titling book series in Calibre, using the metadata function, in order to have the series name and position apparent as part of the title (e.g. "Aubrey-Maturin Series 1 - Master and Commander"). Imported the books from their various locations into Calibre, edited the metadata, deleted the old listings from ADE and then added them from the Calibre library location back into ADE -- but none of the metadata changes came back to ADE with them. I did see from some of the HTML that the changes I made were reflected in package.opf, which presumably is what Calibre reads for title, but not apparently ADE. So, the question is whether there is some way to get Calibre metadata changes reflected in the ADE library? And, related, I haven't yet seen a way to copy titles from Calibre directly to my Kobo. I presume I'll figure it out, but any hints welcome. Ron |

Okay, I figured out about moving books to the Kobo using Calibre -- but the title that gets displayed is not the title I've given the book through metadata editing.
I have a Peter May series, which is called "The China Thrillers". In the metadata, I have given the first of these the title "China Thrillers 1 - The Fire Maker". I want the title to have the series name first. However, when copied to the device via Calibre, it comes out as "The Firemaker: 1 (The China Thrillers)". This means that an alpha sort on the Kobo will have all of the China Thrillers distributed all over, not what I want. When imported into ADE, I get just "The Firemaker" as the title. R. |

First, you should try using plugboards, see Preferences ==> Import/Export ==> Metadata plugboards. This allows you to define dynamic renaming rules for exported books.
See: Plugboard, template, and custom composite column recipes for more details, inspiration, and help. Metadata is never updated in the in-library copy, only on export or when using Polish books or Embed Metadata. You can add either to the toolbar via Preferences ==> Interface ==> Toolbar. |

As eschwartz says use Polish Books to update the metadata in the file. The Modify ePub plugin can also do this.
