Author Sort Problems

Because I wan't my Kindle to display Books from Calibre in Author's last name order I either individually or by bulk edit changed display on Calibre (Verrsion 1.9) to this format. However the Calibre display is all over the place e.g . - one example Adam Johnson is displayed before Agatha Christie and there are many many other examples.

Probably no easy solution but I am stumped. Luckily I have another copy of Calibre which is reasonably up to date on another computer and can change Authors last name prior to transfe rring to Kindle ?

Any help appreciated

Thanks for your help which was extremely unhelpful having looked at FAQ section and the problems which users have had with this issue in the past I am still no clearer to solving the problem.
It is great program but it would have been useful if Authors were stored in the Library on a last name basis as I would have thought one would search for e.g . "Archer" or "Connelly" and not "Jeffrey" or " Michael" ?

If calibre is not sorting the authors by last name, then you have done something to change that behaviour.

By default, calibre stores and displays authors as "FN LN". But, it also stores a "author sort". By default, this is "LN, FN". With this, when you sort the list by author, even though it displays "Agatha Christie" and "Adam Johnson". It will be sorted as "Christie, Agatha" and "Johnson, Adam". This is what I see in my calibre library.

There are some ways to change this. There are tweaks so that the author sort will be displayed and created. Plus, you can enter the author sort yourself for any particular author. By the sounds of it, you have done one of these. The tweaks are changeable in the preferences. For the author sort, these are displayed when editing the metadata of a book or using the "Manage Authors" dialog (right click on the "Authors" in the tab browser). I suggest you look at these and see if you can work out which you have done so you can fix it. Or ask questions on how to fix this. Until we know where things have gone wrong, any suggestions we make, beyond reading the FAQ and manual, are just guesses.

Thank you for your reply. I Think I have got myself into a bit of mess with editing individually and in bulk. I have runs of books in alpha order and then others not in strict alpha order. Any suggestions or do I have to start again say opening up a new library and entering all the "A" and "B" books etc etc etc

You can try the Quality Check plugin. It has all several options for looking for and fixing authors that have been entered correctly.
