Installing/Moving to New PC

Hey Guys & Gals,

I have Calibre on my current Windows Vista system as well as my kobo library and Kindle desktop.

I just purchased a new Windows 8 or 8.1 system and would like to know how to move or install Calibre and its database to the new system?

Thanks in advance

@Grenpa - firstly you should download the latest calibre from here ==>> Download calibre.

Here's what you need to do to move the library folder(s) ==>> How do I move my calibre library from one computer to another?

What that doesn't address is the "calibre configuration" data which is where preferences and customisations are stored. This is covered in the third paragraph of this ==>> How do I backup calibre?.

I've migrated several calibre configurations from older versions of Windows to Windows 8.0 and 8.1. The procedure I use is roughly as follows:
  • copy library folder(s) and configuration folder to a usb device - I use a 64GB thumb drive,
  • download and install latest calibre - make sure it works with the default library
  • close calibre and backup the existing config folder (usually at C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\calibre).
  • remove everything from the configuration folder
  • copy everything from the configuration folder I have on the thumb drive into the now empty configuration folder on the new machine.
  • start calibre and make sure it 'hangs together' with the default library
  • close calibre and copy the libraries from the thumb drive to wherever 'they were' or somewhere else
  • start calibre and use the Library->Switch/create library to 'register' the library folder(s) I just copied from the thumb drive.

The last step can be a 'bit tricky' if you don't/can't restore the library folder(s) to the exact same location(s) as they were on the old machine - including drive letters.

BR

Hello,

Thanks for the quick response to my post.

I had read that link you gave me before I posted.
My post was more about finding out if there were any issue with moving the library from vista to Windows 8 or 8.1. I have been preparing all my software to be reinstalled and/or moved and several of my software have special install or move conditions going to Windows 8 or 8.1. With some of my software when I install on new system I can't move the old content even if I install in exact same spot.

Anyways if there are no special conditions with going from Vista to 8+ then I guess I am set.

My new system should be here any day now and I will have to spend weeks installing software again. Plus a lot of updating as some of my software is older and won't run on Windows 8+.

Anyway thanks again for the link even thou i read it before.
Have a great day.
