Seamus Heaney Has Died
Nobel laureate Seamus Heaney has died at age 74. (http://www.nytimes.com/2013/08/31/ar...t-74.html?_r=0).
He is known for exploring the political struggles of Ireland in his poetry, as well as being one of the finest observers of the sea and nature. His poetry was quite accessible to all readers, and often included unforgettable images of rural Ireland. His readership extended worldwide. He will be missed .... [Edited for length - MODERATOR]
Thank you, Seamus, for your understanding. Writing poetry and understanding the process both seem to be important to me, and it is such a mystery why I continue to put down poem after poem in these small booklets which no one reads and which sit on my shelves over my head in this study of my house defining my life in more depth than I ever could in any of the conversations with those I love and know. What a loss. I'm not a big fan of poetry, but I really enjoyed his works. He did a great job on translation of Beowulf as well.

This member has been told many, many times to keep his posts from rambling all over the place, or they will be edited down. Too, he inundates every conceivable forum with his off-toic memoir writings, and he then disappears from active participation in the forums. (A recent search - today, right now - shows that most forums have deleted the post on Heaney that he made a few days ago when he serially posted to so many forums.) If you wish to read his full, rambling piece, then go here: http://www.absolutewrite.com/forums/....php?p=9247878 Back to topic - please. A Man With A History
As a writer and author, poet and publisher, editor and researcher, reader and scholar, online blogger and online journalist, I pleaded "guilty" to some of the charges. When one writes extensively in cyberspace, one wins some and loses some. Some sites find my posts excellent, and some don't. Eventually I find some level of "meeting site conventions" in most places.
This site, for some reason, is taking longer. I post at over 8000 sites, and I think the main reason I take longer to "get with it" at some sites is simply that I forget what the site's conventions are: 8000 sites is a lot of sites and it's hard to keep track of the rules and regulations of each site. Belated apologies, yet again!-Ron Price, Tasmania ![]() Last edited by RonPrice; 01-16-2015 at 03:09 AM. Reason: To update the wording |

This was one of my favourite bits from Heaney's translation of Beowulf:
Code:
Then morning came and many a warrior gathered, as I've heard, around the gift-hall, clan-chiefs flocking from far and near down wide-ranging roads, wondering greatly at the monster's footprints. His fatal departure was regretted by no-one who witnessed his trail, the ignominious marks of his flight where he'd skulked away, exhausted in spirit and beaten in battle, bloodying the path, hauling his doom to the demons' mere. The bloodshot water wallowed and surged, there were loathsome upthrows and overturnings of waves and gore and wound-slurry. With his death upon him, he had dived deep into his marsh-den, drowned out his life and his heathen soul: hell claimed him there. |
