That's not new. Coloured E-Ink has been around for ages. It's just a question of using coloured/white material in the capsules instead of black/white material.

This morning E Ink Holdings announced the availability of a new color-changing film known as Prism that's based on the company's electronic paper technology used in devices like Amazon's Kindle and the Pebble smartwatch. But the new material isn't destined to finally bring a dash of color to your electronic books. Instead, it's being positioned as a tool to let architects and interior designers dynamically change the color and mood of a space.

E Ink Holdings hasn't specified why the new Prism material isn't being used on mobile devices just yet, but it might have something to do with extra hardware needed to facilitate the color-changing trick that could make it difficult to integrate into smaller devices. But it sounds like a neat advancement of a technology that many thought would be killed off by tablets, but has managed to find endless ways to stay technologically relevant.

Then why don't they release such colored e-readers as a mainstream device?
I think I might be interested in such a reader :-)

Would you be interested in an ereader that was white/red instead of white/black? Or white/blue instead of white/black? The're just replacing the black with some other single colour. So, I doubt that it would be useful in an ereader.

Is it all they're doing? I would not care for such a reader, if only 2 colors are used then black/white is the best combination with the best contrast. I would not call such a reader a color reader as I was thinking more of a full color range type of screen, like an Ipad screen but with e-ink.

The only 'full' colour E-Ink screens currently use RGBW filters in front of a B&W EInk display, so that they are lower resolution and contrast. 'Triton' was the name for these.

Currently, the best hope for a low power high contrast colour display seems to be LiquaVista, which Amazon bought a couple of years ago.
