pdf +6" ereader: H2O, inkpad, i86, m96
Hi all.
I'm a medical student and read a lot of my literature in digital form. I mainly have pdf:s I tried the kobo glo hd. I liked the front light but for some reason I didn't like the screen szise with pdf. Also to use abby transformer (which is the best option I have tride) does not convert correctly to epub (text sections end up on other places than it should). I'm a big fan of Ivona-tts witch this unit does not support. I could use my phone for tts though but it would be nice if it is incorporated. I wonder what your opinion is on the i86, inkpad and the m96. I think I could live with no front-light. how is the front-light of the i86, I have heard bad things. Is the android os run ereaders responsive or are they slow? is the i86 big enough for pdf:s or should I go with the m96. How does the lower m96's ppi affect text, do you think it would be a problem? heard that it could be problems with the m96 sim card, is it something that is normal? m96 capacitive or with pen? what do you think is best? Does anyone know if the pen version support dual pencils to pinch? what about the h2o in portrait mode and pdf? A lot of questions. it is really hard to know when you don't see the product irl and can load a pdf and compare. Thanks for all your input! |

Hi, I was a medical student. I suggest none of the above. A large-screen tablet would be better for medical papers and textbooks.

Principally I thought about having a small ereader and just read the text and then have a tablet to use for productivity. but converting my pdf books to epub is a hassle. So I was thinking of reading them unconverted. then I need a bigger ereader I think. The glo was to slow when using reflow in koreader and coolreader does not support pdf. Perhaps I could learn to convert good in sigil but so far I have not had the time to immerse myself.
The main reason is that I don't like reading from my computer screen. I have tried to read from a 7" tablet and I quite liked it, but the kobo glo hd ereder is nicer. I thought that a ereader would be nicer for my stamina getting trough big chuncks of text. Why would you think I would be happier with a tablet? If you know a lot of tablets perhaps you could suggest one. Last edited by poppe; 09-22-2015 at 09:54 AM. |

The reason for the tablet is pdfs do not scale well on an ereader.
Note even if you convert from pdf to epub, it is not reflowable text but fixed text. Someone learned that the hard way. |

Thanks for replying!
How do you mean. I can reflow text from a pdf using koreader, but it takes a lot of cpu power. Hence the slow workflow in this mode. If I transform the pdf to epub I can reflow and scale to my pleasure. Or is it something else that you talk about, that I don't understand? But enough screen real estate I could watch a whole pdf page at a time in portrait. the other workaround would be to watch a column at a time and making a laying down z in workflow. I think that there are reading apps that supports this. So i was thinking that perhaps an 7-10" coupled with some good software perhaps could solve this problem. Reflowable text is different from scaling.
Reflowable text means that there are no set pages. |

I don't know what kind of books you're reading, but if they're anything like the books we have for software development, they have a huge margin, top, bottom and on the side. Just by cropping those margins, I found that those PDF books are not too bad to read on an 6" reading device. An 6.8" or larger would naturally be even better. I wouldn't personally try to convert PDF to epub, especially not for that kind of books where page layout generally is very important (graphs, tables, images...)

Medical textbooks rely heavily on colour. Scientific papers rely on diagrams, tables, graphs, sometimes colour, two-column tiny texts. Get a ten inch tablet and be done with it, honestly. Six inch readers are great for reading novels in reflowable formats.
As to which tablet: first decide on iOS or Android, consider your budget, and go from there. Both have high quality tablets available. |

hi. I would recommend onyx boox m96. I have it also. it is really good for textbooks. just because you can zoom page and use navigation mode. ipad also good idea, but it is just your choice due to eye strain. I cant use led displays so much due to this. but onyx boox m96 and sony dpt s1 is really good for our pdfs. dpt s1 is too expensive , I think. go for onyx

I would not recommend the h2o for heavy pdf reading. You can't pinch to zoom with it and it takes awhile for PDFs to render. To be fair though I haven't used any eink device that does PDFs anywhere near as good as a tablet. The h2o is great for ebooks- much better than my nst w glowlight, so if you ever want a device for just ebooks it gets 5 stars on that.
If you want a cheap tablet the google nexus 7 2013 versions sells for 150 bucks and won all kinds of awards. Steer clear of anything under 100 as battery life and quality just aren't there at that price point. Last edited by cocopuff; 10-01-2015 at 10:59 PM. Reason: Tablet info |
