Class of 2015

Image deleted by moderator - too large

Top Row (left to right): Felix Nussbaum; Edith Sitwell; Filippo Tommaso Marinetti
Middle Row (left to right): Rachel Carson; Edvard Munch; Flannery O’Connor; Antoine de Saint-Exupéry
Bottom Row (left to right): Glen Miller; Wassily Kandinsky; Ian Fleming; Piet Mondrian

Pictured above is our top pick of those whose works will, on 1st January 2015, be entering the public domain in many countries around the world. Of the eleven featured, eight will be entering the public domain in countries with a ‘life plus 70 years’ copyright term (e.g. most European Union members, Brazil, Israel, Nigeria, Russia, Turkey, etc.) and three in countries with a ‘life plus 50 years’ copyright term (e.g. Canada, New Zealand, and many countries in Asia and Africa). As always it’s a sundry and diverse rabble who’ve assembled for our graduation photo – including two giants of 20th-century abstract art, the creator of one of the world’s most reproduced paintings, the creator of one of the world’s best-loved children’s books, and the creator of the world’s most read about, and watched, Secret Service agents.

Below is a little bit more about each of their lives (with each name linking through to their respective Wikipedia pages, from which each text has been based).

I recognize Flannery O’Connor; Antoine de Saint-Exupéry; and Ian Fleming but have never heard of the others before.

Kandinsky is also an artist. I'm not much for that era but my sister likes his work, and Munch's.

Rachel Carson wrote Silent Spring, a seminal work in the environmental sciences, though I didn't realise it was that old.

1962. It first appeared serialized in the New Yorker. She died in 1964, which is life plus 50.

Everybody should take an afternoon and listen to Glen Miller and his band. I infected all the teenagers in my neighborhood with him (while they were still young and impressionable and around long enough to fix my computer). I know of at least 3 that still listen to him and they haven't been teenagers for a while now. My Dad was a huge fan and we burned a bunch of CDs to play in the car.

This youtube link has a lot of the movie favorites. You might recognize some of them.

I gave my grandson (21) some vinyl 33rpm classics including the great Glen Miller, he has a retro player and loves vinyls, all found at thrift shops but he doesn't care.

Nice photo!

Marinetti was an Italian futurist, author of the Futurist Manifesto of 1909. It was a sort lyrical celebration of a hi-tech modernity. Unfortunately, it got picked up by the Italian fascists, and - if I remember correctly - futurists were reduced to organising air-shows in fascist Italy. Marinetti eventually broke with Fascism, but it took him a while.
