SpellCheck - Abbreviation(?) Apostrophes

Is there a setting somewhere that I've missed that will ignore words ending in ’s.

I have an instance...the word(s) "institute’s" is clearly short for "institute is/has" but the options I have are:

• institutes
• institutes’s (not institutes’...which would seem more 'correct')

...but "There's" is not found wanting in the same fashion. They are both similarly constructed, but not differentiated.

Do I have to handle these manually?

That's not a question of a setting, suggestions come from the installed dictionaries. In this case I assume you are using the builtin english dictionary, which in turn comes from LibreOffice. If you dont like the suggestions then you can either try installing a different dictionary or handle it manually.

how about having feature in the editor that allows user to have a list of words that are to be regarded as misspellings, even though they are in the dictionary. This is not an original idea - it's borrowed from MS Word.

Not sure it's relevant to my issue..."institute's" isn't misspelled....it's like a hyphenated word just it has an apostrophe instead of a hyphen.

It's a valid 'word' just not one that it's not recognized by my current dictionary.

A feature to add specific word/combo structures might be useful though.

Aah - the contraction "institute's", you could add it to a user dictionary?

You could also do this

1. show all words,
2. filter on 's - watch out straight apostrophe v a closing single quote
3. sort on 'Misspelled' column
4. select all misspelt words
5. copy to clipboard
6. paste into a text editor
7. winnow the chaff
8. save winnowed list to clipboard
9. import clipboard into user dictionary

After you've done that on a few books the number of misspelt 's words should dwindle to few-and-far between.

My 'alarm' bells rang when I saw the "institutes's". I know the NYC and CMS et al, say ...s's is OK, but they didn't have Miss Pritchard rapping their knuckles with her ruler, or have their ears cauliflowered by Mr Kneller's blackboard duster

There already is such a feature. You can add any words you like to the user dictionaries.

I was thinking the other way and adding a few definitive optional rules for words to ignore:

Ignore words in all CAPS - Y/N (FBI, FAA, UK, USA)
Ignore words with numbers (1QT, ABC123)
Only check base of possessives (cat's) (if ends in apostrophe+s, only check root word)

Yes, but that's on a case by case single word basis....I meant en masse.

Sort of like add anything like "*'s "

Good point...hmm.

Doesn't look as though there is a simple solution..back to the clicking.
