Battery memory sensitivity?
Received a seventh generation kindle for christmas, and am concerned about how senstive the battery is to gaining a memory, and failing to continue to hold a charge. Do I need to be paranoid enough to only charge it when it's completly dead, unplug when it's done, or can I simply charge it when it's convenient, or leave it charging overnight (far more then it needs.)?

Quite the opposite - never, ever let it go completely dead.

Absolutely right. Never, ever let a lithium battery completely discharge.
Battery "memory" hasn't been an issue for many years. |

The main enemy of Lithium batteries in a device with a smart charging circuit is heat. If the temperature isn't too extreme for your continued comfort, your Kindle should be fine. Don't leave your Kindle in cars in the summer, and try to avoid charging it in a hot location. Extreme cold should also be avoided.

Thanks for the advice, at least I don't have to be so anal about charging this precisely.

As I understand it, your battery isn't going to instantly stop working if it goes dead (and most devices won't really let it go truly dead unless you leave it for an extended period - weeks or months, not days), but once you're down to levels where it shows dead you may get irreversible crystalization start to occur. This could reduce your battery life if it happened often enough. With the battery life of an e-reader you won't likely notice, a phone or tablet that you may be charging daily it's more likely to be noticeable.

I've let my various Kindles' batteries go flat, and they've revived. I didn't have the same luck with my Nexus 7. The first time the battery died, it died. ASUS did replace it under warranty, but it took about a month for them to send it back, with a terse note to not let the battery drain all the way again.

Is it safe to charge in a case, better to open the case, or best to take it out completely?
Definitely, heat & deep discharge are the enemy of Li-ion/LiPo batteries - they can be charged at any point, and do not suffer memory. Best stored at low (not freezing) temperature with partial charge. The "memory effect" is overstated anyway - in NiCd, the true memory effect needed precise repeated partial discharge, and recharge with no overcharge. Overcharge would reset that memory effect, but overcharge can create a condition many call memory, where the secondary conversion results in a lowered voltage over part of the discharge curve. |

I haven't taken either my Paperwhite or my Voyage out of their cases since I got them. Haven't had an issue with battery life. I haven't felt them get warm while charging, either, and I always use a wall charger.

We're only talking about 5W of charging power. That's a negligible amount of heat. Not like charging a laptop battery.
