Italics, spacing, and mass editing

Hi all...

I just bought a book, and I'm finding that in both the .kepub and .epub versions, every time a word is italicized, there's no space before the italicized word and the regular text.

So:

This sentence only hasone italicized word. Butsome sentences havemultiple sections of italicsin them.

As this particular book has a lot of internal monologue/dialogue, and that appears in italics, this is getting REALLY annoying to read.

Is there some command that will let me edit the whole document? If so, can somebody give me the steps? I'm very, very new to editing the bodies of .kepubs/.epubs.

Thank you as always.

If you post code from the XML that has the italicized word, someone can give you the regex needed to fix this.

I've seen this before with some eBooks where the source was PDF.

Where do I go about finding the XML code in order to post it? I appreciate your patience--as I said, this part of Calibre is very new to me.

Thanks!

I know this used to happen a lot in books from Kobo. I *thought* that they had resolved the problem though. Have you tried alerting Kobo to this issue (either through official channels or maybe reachout to some of the Kobo staff who do frequent these forums)?

Nope, I honestly hadn't thought of it. Is there anybody in particular on these forums you would suggest?

It's a Stephen King book that came out about 8 years ago, so they may have resolved it, but maybe missed a few here and there?

One other suggestion is to try downloading the eBook again. You might get an updated copy.

I'll definitely give that a go. I did try deleting the book from my Kobo, and then loading it via the Kobo Desktop, but the same issue was there as well.

You would need to open the book using the 'Edit Book' button.

This will open the book in a new window and see how it is constructed.

I believe the default view is a file list on the left, a middle section and, on the left a page preview pane as seen here [Link]

Double click on one of the files list as a text file from the list on the left and the 'code view' will open in the middle section and the preview pane will show the rendered text.

OK..so far so good.

Now, find some italicized text by scrolling the preview pane....the code pane may scroll along with it.

When you find some italic text you need to examine the code that represents that text.

It may look like

Code:
<span class="somename">Italic Text Here</span>
or

Code:
<i class="italic">Italic Text Here</i>
or

Code:
<em class="italic">Italic Text Here</em>
If the text before and after that code butts up against the end '<>' characters then we have a code formatting issue. If not, then it's probably a device issue.
