Calibre bug?
I don't know if what is happening is due to Calibre or some other program, but this has happened to me twice:
Everything is running smoothly. I open Calibre and my internet connection slows way down, I cannot connect to telnet at all. When I close Calibre, the problem persists. When I look in Task Manager, I notice Calibre is still running in the processes tab, and I cannot kill it. If I restart my computer, everything works fine until I start Calibre. Un-installing and re-installing Calibre does not fix the issue. I have to install a back up of my OS (Windows 7 Ultimate) and then install Calibre and everything is fine. I do not know if Calibre is even at fault here, I just thought it strange. I could not find anyone else having the same problem when I searched Google. The first time it happened was in mid November. I installed my backup and everything was fine until a couple of days ago. Reinstalled the backup again and everything is working perfectly. Anyone else have this problem? It isn't worth a major discussion, I was just wondering. Thanks |

First question would be, do you have any plugins installed? If so, which ones, and does the problem persist if you disable them all?

The second time I had those two and Epubsplit and Kobo Utilities. Hopefully, there will not be a third instance, but if there is I will remember to try uninstalling the add ons. Thanks |

Calibre has options: Options are stored in the config, so simply uninstalling has no effect. You need to remove the configuration folder (or the damaged file).
to run in the tray. Preferences: look and feel run the content server on start. Preferences: sharing... |

@ElWorm - Next time it happens go to Performance tab in Task Manager, click on Resource Manager button, click the Network Tab and have a look at the Network Activity panels - see attachment (BTW calibre was running when I captured that image, but its not doing anything network-wise, or anything elsewise).
To run calibre without optional PIs the see ==>> calibre command --ignore-plugins switch BR Last edited by BetterRed; 12-22-2014 at 04:55 PM. |

when calibre is opened, it attempts to go online to check for a new version. that should not take a noticable amount of your internet bandwidth though, unless it's looping somehow. does it succeed in doing that anyway. do you get the update available messages ?

By the way, uninstalling it and installing an older version had no effect, still had the same problem. The only way I could solve the problem was to install a back up of my system before Calibre had ever been installed. I just realized I did not try to use System Restore, probably should have done that, might have been a simple fix to go back a couple of days. I thought it odd that nobody else seemed to have this problem when I Googled. It might be something specific to my set up. |

If an error creeps into them, it STAYS there between installs. If you are lucky, a developer might come by and advise: 'blow xyz.123 away' and you only lose the offending section of settings. If you don't want to wait and see, you nuke all the settings. Note Configuration Settings and Books are different places. You can destroy one without touching the other |

![]() ![]() My DNS provider lost half of Germany and New Jersey recently. The 'server not found' errors were taking an age to materialise. Blithering idiots tried to blame me. Quote:
Take PeterT's hint on board, see if you can track it down to an out-of-action news download site - although I've never seen anything in that regard, which lead to the condition you're experiencing. Have you checked for any of the conditions mentioned here calibre freezes/crashes [misbehaves] occasionally? Next time it happens, as well as looking to see which processes are chewing up the network, go to the Task Manager-Processes tab, uncheck Show processes from all users, and KILL off (one by one) other processes that you 'understand' - or look in the tray and exit all the programs that are not 'really' needed - eg clipboard enhancers, weather alerts, download managers etc. BR Last edited by BetterRed; 12-23-2014 at 03:57 PM. |
