In the cards

Say I have a micro SD card full of epub files. I want to pop that sucker into a new e-ink machine and keep reading! What's my best option? |

Given that you specify the need to directly use a microSD card, your options are very limited; very few eInk devices have microSD card slots. Some have full-size SD slots, if you don't mind using an adapter, but most eInk readers don't have card slots at all. You could look at Kobo readers, some of which have an SD card slot. |

Not an issue yet, as my NOOK is going strong. That other thread about screen damage started me thinking!

If you must use a microSD card, your options will be restricted. Is there any particular difficulty simply copying the contents of the card onto the new device? You *might* want to take a look at the Kindle PW2, there are things to be said both for and against it vs the Kobos. But insisting on a microSD card means you cannot even take it into consideration. |

Kindle doesn't speak to epubs, right? I don't want to have to convert everything!

Fortunately, calibre speaks to both EPUBs and Kindles, and can run a batch job even while you are sound asleep. Unless you simply can't spare the loss of disk space, it shouldn't be a problem. My advice is to focus on the features of the different devices available. For instance: The Kindle is supposed to have a vastly superior dictionary. The Kindle is simple, no frills but just get's the job done. The Kobos allow you to customize all kinds of things... to death. It could be regarded as simple clutter and the firmware can be touchy and unstable, whereas Kindles tend to have rock-solid firmware. Leaving aside the issue of the Kindle's Cloud Collections, which is/was a real PITA but seems to have been smoothed out more or less with the latest firmware. |

I'm sure the Kindle is a nice machine, but I sure hate the thought of Amazon becoming the only option for ebooks.

I thought most, if not all, Kobos use the microSD card now. I know the Glo does. Although I don't use the card slot at all, I only keep around 500 books on my reader and just transfer what I need through Calibre, preferring to keep all my books in one place on my PC.

Many people do exactly that. Many people prefer the Kobo devices, and buy their books from Amazon and convert them.

You can read your epubs on a Kindle, if you can jailbreak it and run KoReader on it. An SD card slot is in most of the Kobos. I personally don't like using the SD card in mine. There always seems to be some issue or another. I'd rather have the books on the internal memory. |

Well, to clarify, I didn't like the SD card experience in my Aura HD, or my Aura. As for my Kobo Glos, the cases I use interfere with the SD card, so I don't use cards in them either. Other people, I am sure, have no problems using cards in theirs.
