Android 5.0 (Lollipop) is releasing soon...

Allegedly this week for several Nexus tablets and phones. Has anyone tried Calibre Companion on the pre-release SDK's yet? Or on the final release?

I have run CC on the Android API 21 emulator (lollipop) and found no problems. I connected as a wireless device and to the content server. I added items to the grouping drawer, sorted, changed language, etc. I wasn't able to launch a reader because there weren't any installed in the emulator.

One thing I cannot test is SD cards. We will see ...

Yes, I've just read they've pulled it due to a severe battery drain on wifi...

I never doubted you! If anyone would have tried it yet, I'd have guessed you.

{So when will CC implement the new 'Material Design' UI? )

What was it that Annie (of the show "Annie") sang? Tomorrow. Tomorrow. I love ya, tomorrow. You're always just a day away.

chaley - I see that one of the improvements in Android 5 is to allow setting permissions on folders not owned by the app. Is this likely to solve the problems with SD cards that Android 4.4 introduced, do you think?

Unknown. From what I understand, Google added a new layer of permissions based on new API. One must use "Content Providers" to access the SD card, and then use something called DocumentFile and DocumentsContract to access the files on the card. The existing File interfaces don't work with this new stuff, which means that CC would need to support two separate and different APIs to access storage.

I am not looking forward to this. Supporting new and legacy APIs is a bug-laden pain. We don't have any devices with SD cards that will run Lollipop. The emulator does not support SD cards. And so on. I am considering not trying to support it unless the existing mechanisms are now broken.

I completely understand. Best thing to do is probably just wait and see!

Update: 3+ weeks later and I am still waiting. How many others are also? (Nexus 7 2012)

Both my N7 (2012) and my N5 have been updated. CC runs well on both devices.

I must say that I am not pleased with the update on my N7. It seems much more sluggish, and it has spontaneously rebooted several times. Sometimes it simply stops responding for a time, and I have no idea what it is doing. I managed to "friend" on Facebook some people I don't know from Adam during one of these hiccups.

My N5 works much better. No hiccups, no slowdowns.

I am not impressed with "material design". Google seems to have gone toward cartoon colors and visual bling. Why anyone would want red action bars is beyond me. Fortunately for my sanity, none of this seems to affect CC negatively. I don't think that CC's performance has changed either direction. The screen change animation stuff in Lollipop does something, but it also doesn't (seem to) break anything. But then, I am an old fart who does not see much benefit in change for change's sake.

I agree - on my N7 (2013) touching the screen often seems not to work, but after waiting (seems like a long time, but I'm sure just a longer time than before) it does do what I wanted - very sluggish to say the least. I'm not having the rebooting problem, though, so far anyway.

Mike->Yes, I have read about this, and for some it seems serious. I keep looking for a Google statement acknowledging it but so far... nothing. I very well may delay upgrading until Google announces a patch...

Mike->One of the purported major benefits of Lollipop is substantially better battery life though better control of apps using wifi, etc. There are reports that this is working well...

I just found this comment on the (Google) Nexus 7 forums:
"The update turned on notifications for all apps. After turning most off one at a time, it seems snappier."
