Will reformatting restore a malfunctioning eReader?

My Sony PRC300 is stuck on continuously loading. I've tried everything (soft re-set, hard re-set etc etc). Now a Sony tech said to format it with FAT32. I haven't come across any such thing Googling around. Is that the sort of thing that will restore the Ereader or will it mess it up even more (and maybe nix my chance of returning it for a refund)? Thanks.
