Which to buy
Am scrolling through the forum and still cannot find a good way to decide due to fragmented information.
I'm currently reading using the Ipad and I'm happy. Only, my kids and wife also use the Ipad so I want a separate device. Also, I'm working on a PC all day so an E-ink sounds better for the eyes. So looking for an E-reader: - to use in Europe - size 2GB is enough (more is OK but not necessary) - fits with epub format - can read in nighttime and low light conditions - is not too slow compared to the Ipad My choice was a Kobo Glo: but this one seems to have issues with page turning. Kindle Paperwhite was next but there issue is Epub format not supported. Any comments appreciated. W |

If you got copies of ebooks from a friend, they must not have DRM, so you could easily convert them to Kindle format using Calibre, or other software. Of course, there is the issue of whether he could have given you the books legally or not. Probably not.

Kindle paperwhite?
Quote:
Looking at all spec's I think the Paperwhite from Kindle get's the best comments. I'll be in US in a few weeks so will go to a bestbuy and have a look. I guess there are no issues to buy a Kindle Paperwhite in US to use in Europe? |

It has issues for me, but I'm used to the light (more sensitive) tap of a Kindle or Nook. I think most people with Kobo Glos normally use the swipe motion rather than tapping. If I could get into the "swipe" habit I don't think I would have any issue at all.

My problem with the Kobo (the H2O at least) is that I found the touchscreen to be significantly less accurate than any other device I've owned, which made fine control for activities like selecting text, or tapping small hyperlinks, to be rather difficult on occasions.

if you like a Glo, go with a Glo. most eink readers are going to be slower / less responsive than a tablet like an iPad anyways, but with an iPad you're expected to interact with the device often, swiping or pinch-zooming when playing a game or viewing multimedia drivel. with an ereader, you're only expected to interact with the device once every 1-3 minutes to do nothing more than turn the page (95% of the time).
as long as you still have plenty of access to the iPad for viewing a PDF or other stuff, don't worry about an ereader being a bit slower. buy a used ereader as cheaply as possible to make it your auxiliary / secondary device for just reading books, and leave it at that. if you didn't have a tablet, then there's more decisions to be made as to which ereader device to spend your money on. |

True, but that's unrelated to the question I answered, which was whether there would be any issues with buying a PW in the US and using it in Europe. A US-bought PW will behave in Europe exactly the same as a PW bought in Europe will do.

Yeah I know that. It's just that us Europeans can't make a full use of kindle as USA people can.

You may like to consider a used Kobo Aura HD, given to the fact that it is a wonderful and quality device. Further, since most people are vying for the H2O, the Aura HDs can be found at throwaway prices these days.
My 0.002 euros!! There's, of course the support for side loaded ePubs and the stunning HD display. |
