Help! Cannot change contents, cannot reset to factory setting
I have a Kindle 4 NT (black, version 4.1.1) for about 6 months. I haven't hack it or done anything special. In the recent weeks I suddenly found there is a very strange problem with it. I cannot change the contents. "Restart" and "Reset to factory setting" doesn't work.
1. There are some books in my kindle. Some are sent by Calibre, others are downloaded from Amazon cloud. I tried to open all the books and there is no fail. But sometimes when I try to add mark, Kindle warns me it cannot be added because of no space, even in fact there is about 1G free space. 2. Once I tried to remove one book from my device (operate in Kindle), sometimes there is no action. The contents are still there. Sometimes the operation works and the book seems to be successfully deleted, but after restart, it returns to Kindle. 3. I connect Kindle to my computer. Use Calibre to delete the books. Seems ok from Calibre. But from the Kindle Disk, I can still find those files. If eject the disk and try to open the books in Kindle, it reports error. Plug kindle to computer, and try to scan/fix the Kindle Disk, it reports some errors are fixed and all the books disappears. But after restart, all the books are still there. Seems I changed nothing. 4. I tried to delete all the contents from Kindle, then scan/fix the kindle disk, then format that disk, then I tried full fill that 1.4G disk with music file. No abnormal during my operation. But after restart, all the music files disappears and the previous books come back. 5. I tried "reset to factory setting" for several times, but it only deregister my amazon account. All my books and settings are still there. It even doesn't wipe my Wifi setting. In a conclusion, it likes that the current contents and settings are stored into Kindle's factory setting. After "restart" or "reset to factory setting" Kindle will try to recover to that status. I tried to use SSH to connect it and flash the factory image to it. But finally I found 4.1.1 disabled SSH, and the lessons in internet are not clear for 4.1.1 SSH. So I haven't successfully done it yet. If you have any idea/suggestion about this problem, please kindly help me. Thanks very much. |

I'd suggest contacting Kindle Customer Service. It sounds very much as if your device is faulty, and if it's only 6 months old it will still be under warranty.
