Kindle Voyage Stolen.

My Kindle Voyage has been stolen this morning. It's almost 2 years old this January. I have managed to make Amazon block the device from being used.

My question is: Is it 100% Unusable? Meaning, the user won't be able to sideload books into it?

I am really pissed at the thief and I know there's no way for me to recover the device. The only goal I want now is for the device to be unusable.

Nothing that requires an Amazon account will work -- so collections will stop working and so will buying books -- but sideloading will still work, though the thing is sufficiently nonfunctional with registration impossible that I can't see anyone wanting to use it: certainly it would be almost unfenceable.

Amazon have also not yet added a facility to short the battery through the thief or turn off the charging circuit so the thing explodes on the thief. :P

All you lose with a non-registrable Kindle is collection support, isn't it? Still perfectly usable for reading sideloaded books, although the chance of any thief actually wanting to do so is extremely remote, I suspect. It'll probably end up on eBay or Craigslist, or just being thrown away.

Once Amazon knows it was stolen, they do everything they can to ensure it is valueless to the thief.

But they can't or won't remotely brick it.

They have blacklisted it, which prevents it from being registered and thereby disables a lot of functionality but still allows the thief to sideload books and read them without collections support.

It isn't worthless, just crippled -- and since most Kindle thieves don't actually want an ereader, they want the money from selling an electronic device, they have lost that opportunity.
Smart Craigslist/Ebay buyers will make sure the device can be registered before handing over money (Craigslist) -- or report it as a fraudulent purchase and demand their money be refunded (Ebay).

Bummer sorry for you loss. But maybe your home owners insurance will cover a replacement.

I don't have that kind of insurance but oh well. Yeah, I was afraid that this kindle will still usable in some sort of way. Amazon told me that the device will be 100% bricked but I also know better. That's why I asked here the real deal.

Oh well. I already got a replacement but I opted to order the White Paperwhite. I am not that keen on buying another Voyage since what I am after for buying that was originally the screen resolution. Now that the Paperwhite has it, I don't see any reason shelling out extra $80. An Oasis is also an option, but I just can't make myself buy an e-reader (no matter how good it looks) when the price is just a couple of bucks shy from a Playstation 4.

Please note, the white kindle is not the same with kindle paperwhite. White kindle does not have lamp.

White is also an option for the paperwhite.

I would be interested to see your thoughts on the difference between the Voyage and the Paperwhite, as someone who has read extensively on the Voyage. They have the same High resolution carta screen, but I've read a few reports that suggest the glass screen on the Voyage brings out the contrast better than the plastic screen on the Paperwhite. (I know the Paperwhite screen appears to have noticeably poorer contrast than the Carta screens on the Kobos. Presumably, this is by the added capacitive touch layer.)

I really doubt it's due to the capacitive layer. That's a chemical coating which is very, very thin indeed. It certainly shouldn't have any visual impact.

Sure, no worries! I will post it here as soon as I have my first week on it. I ordered the White-colored Paperwhite. I am not sure if they upgraded it to some sorts, let's see.

I have both the Paperwhite 3 and the Voyage now. I like them both as readers. The voyage has better contrast and a whiter screen. The Paperwhite 3 , I use outside and carry with me in my purse. I started with a Paperwhite 1, and used it for years. The PW3 is much better, it has a better screen & more storage than the PW1. So the Paperwhite 3 is a nice reader for the cost also.
