HP and ASU demo bendable, foldable displays
Just caught this article via Engadget:
http://www.engadget.com/2008/12/08/h...onic-displays/ What's the implication of foldable displays on ebook Readers? One future implementation of such displays that might interest ereaders might be in the availability of foldable electronic newspapers that can get content dynamically. Other than that, what do you think? |

I think foldable has much less importance than the fact that they are basically unbreakable.

It does seem like displays will get interesting next year. We still don't know what Pixel Qi will be producing, and there was also a recent Engadget article on ITRI's folding TFT-EPD display: ready for smartphones next year.

For me the most important features of these new displays are:
low power consumption do they have a high refresh rate? light and flexible colour It is really exciting to think what we will be able to buy in five years time. ![]() |

Finally......a public announcement.
I saw the prototype of this display earlier this year at one of our internal HP Tech Forums. At that time, the demonstration sample was not a full color display but did readily show just how unbreakable it could be. The conversation I had with the lead researcher was quite intriguing in the area of leveraging ink jet printer technology for being able to 'print' the active substrate. -Jeff |

Flexible (and therefore practically unbreakable) is a bonus. The real value is color e-ink. That will bring the color periodical market to readers... and that will be big.
