Kindle Touch Basic
I stopped in Staples earlier today and had a look at the new Kindle Touch Basic.
On sale it's $49.99 and it's a good deal if you want a Kindle and don't mind not having the higher resolution and the front light. None of the cases that Staples has has a light. But some of them do have space to use the M-Edge light that you can get fairly cheap on eBay. The touch screen worked well and it's not heavy at all. There was a Paperwite on demo next to the Basic and with the light of the PW all the way at the lowest, the contrast of the Basic seem a little better due to the background of the Basic being slightly lighter. The black was just fine on the Basic. I was looking at the font choices and I noticed something rather odd. The two serif fonts (not Cecelia or the condensed one) Palitino and one other (I forget the name) were rather weak in that they did not have all that much weight to them. They seem like odd choices to include since they are noticeably lighter then the other included fonts. The sans-serif fonts (Helvetica and Futura) had more weight to them and looked OK. But being sans-serif, not all that good as the main reading font. |

$49 for a full-fledged touch screen eReader is a pretty good deal -- even without a front light. Last edited by rcentros; 11-29-2014 at 06:45 AM. |

This model is known in the Mobileread developer's forum as a: KT2
Support for the 2014 devices (KT2, KV) and the 2014 version of the 2013-PW2 is well underway. Except for our prefix index system - No prefixes established yet in the MR site for the KT2 and KV - but that request is now two months outstanding, just keep on holding your breath. ![]() Looking under the (2013-) PW2 prefix will find you some information (the only difference between the 2013 and the 2014 PW2 is the firmware version(s) ). I use M-Edge light with my K3 They cost $3 at 5 Below & Ollies Stores! I don't have the M-Edge covers so I just slip it between the K3 & the cover. [Just a tip LOL]

Can you adjust how much pressure you can use to turn pages?

You can adjust the pressure needed to turn pages using the page turn pressure sensitive spots on the Kindle Voyage. I don't have one but I've seen that in reviews. On the Paperwhite there's no pressure adjustment but I don't really think one is needed.
You can turn pages either by swiping or by taping. I swipe. Most people seem to tap. Both work well. Swiping seems more intuitive to me since I swipe left to turn to the next page, pretty much the same motion I'd use on a paper book, and right to go to the previous page. Tapping involves tapping in certain areas. Swiping can be anywhere. Of course only we swipers will get into heaven. The big guy knows. ![]() Barry |

If you want a Kindle and don't mind no buttons, no front light and standard resolution, the new Kindle is a good deal if you can still get it for $49.
