Correctly Identifying Publisher
Hope this is in the right thread - it relates to management insofar as correctly identifying metadata.
Anyway... Sometimes multiple publishers and locations are listed in sequence in a book. For example: Quote:
Or is it more appropriate to attribute it to "Penguin Group" or even "Penguin Classics"? |

BPH's have consolidated so much that Penguin encompasses too much
I have been revising my 'Publishers' to be the 'Imprint' (as found on the cover/spine of a paper book or Copyright/Title page) : Penguin Classics Roc Obsidian Mystery Baen Fantasy, Baen Science Fiction, I also drop the : Inc, Ltd, Publishers ... (but leave: Books) Author Published instead of a bazillion author names (when the 'Publisher' was the same as Author) YMMV |

In that case, "Penguin Classics" would be the imprint, not the publisher, I think. Or perhaps even the collection? "Penguin Books Ltd" would be the publisher, and "Penguin Group" the holding, although by saying "Published by the Penguin Group", Penguin itself defines "Penguin Group" as a whole as the publisher, even though technically the Penguin Group owns many publishing houses aside from Penguin Books Ltd.
Yeah, it can be very confusing. I'd go with just "Penguin" and carry on to the next book, which is published by... Hachette. Argh. N. |

It eve gets worse when the ebook version is 'published' by a different company than the print version.
Just look at the list of names published by Baen e-books (formerly Webscriptions) ![]() |

Good lord, I'm this close to just hiding the publisher column if only to make it easier organizing the library and abating the tick.

I hid publisher on the first day.
![]() Except with the academic exception^^, it will never matter. Title and author and series are the important bits, and published date sometimes. Last edited by eschwartz; 12-15-2014 at 11:56 AM. |

@please55 - for regular books I try to put the original publisher and publication date into publisher and pubdate, otherwise I leave them empty - so for the example you cited I would have 'William Heinemann Ltd' and '1968'
Why - well IMO an original publisher (e.g. Heinemann) probably did a lot more to bring the book to fruition than any republisher (e.g. Penguin) ever did - therefore I prefer to give them the angstrom of kudos a publisher might get from having their name in my catalogue  BR Last edited by BetterRed; 12-15-2014 at 02:47 PM. |
