Thumbs down install moon + reader pro

I decide to get this while it was on offer, so I bought it at google play and had it sent to my Kobo tablet - planning to then back it up and sideload it onto my Kindle Fire HDX.

I was iffy about that but somewhere on Amazon site *** someone in a review or discussion said that it would sideload OK

But NO - it's a protected app so I am stumped. Have emailed developer, with proof of purchase, but hoping that someone here has tried what i'm trying and can tell me what to do - please !

*** see here
http://www.amazon.com/forum/kindle?_...x363G4J4Z2EGF2

but reading more carefully , their proposed method is to install a hacked version from a dubious link ( which is probably dead now or well out of date). I don't want to do that, I want to install only a legit bought version.

yes, I have the free version from amazon store installed & working but there are annoying ads in that, & no PDF support, and some other pro-only missing features

no ideas anyone ? & no response from developer.

did it the "dubious" way instead, - latest version installed & working.

So the program IS completely compatible with kindle Fire, amazon lie when they say not .

( actually I read that all 3rd party readers with TTS support are either removed from store or flagged as not compatible - to protect their Audible business.
And as I've paid for a copy via the Google store, I feel ( legally or not) that I have the moral right to install a copy on a different device. After all, I cannot read on 2 devices at once!
if I were the developer i'd get a pro version without TTS approved for amazon, if that is what it takes to get around the ban. Amazon do allow the free version of moon + reader in their store ( as that has no TTS support) but who wants a reader app with adverts !

What you really need to do is root your Fire and install Google Services Framework and the Google Play Store.

Or buy this copy here: http://www.amazon.com/Moon-Reader-Pro/dp/B004TN7QPG

But you will need another Android device to download it onto, then backup the APK and sideload it onto your Kindle. Since it is an Amazon app, it will use the Amazon verification system which is built into the Kindle Fire (instead of hacking Google Services Framework on to verify Google Play verified apps). Yes, Amazon marks it as incompatible. Amazon lied, and if you sideload it to get around their download ban, it will work just fine.

Moral of the story: Kindle Fire is a lousy tablet for accessing the wealth of Android apps, unless you go to the effort of hacking it. It does make a great way to consume Amazon media, though.

I have it sideloaded on my Fire, but I bought the version from the Amazon store (so that it's associated with the same account as my Fire).

I wouldn't call it lousy just not great , it works fine for quite a lot really. Any free app from the Play store can be sideloaded without the need of a second Android device, but yes with paid apps, if they're protected, you run into issues. It's a bit of hoop jumping to sideload stuff, but I've not yet run into something that I want & can't get (which of course will be a personal thing).

I wish someone else made a tablet in the quality/price/spec range of the 8.9 Fire HDX, but at least when it came out no one did (don't know now).

lousy/not great, very subjective terms. I suppose we all get the idea.

(Besides, sideloading free apps may be possible, but it isn't very nice. I also prefer "pacman -S progname" over downloading programs from hundreds of sites, so maybe it's a trend. )

so where I went wrong was buying at google play? because then the backup from google tablet fails because it is protected app.

So If I were starting over I should have bought the same pro version but from amazon store for delivery to my google tablet ( which has the amazon store app installed & is registered to same amazon account )?

But surely I'd hit the same issue of can't back it up in order to copy & sideloaded it, or are you saying that paid-for apps from the amazon store don't use the same "protected" system as paid-for apps from the google store ?
i should be able to test that as I have many other "bought at amazon" apps & games also installed on my Kobo tablet- so next time I have that up & running I will try backing up a couple of those & see what happens

PS neither of my tablets is rooted & that's not something I really want to have to do.

If you can back up the .apk of an app, it will work on any other device that is verified with the store it came from and the same account. Each appstore usually uses their own protection scheme. Since Google Play is not installed on the Fire, even sideloading it won't work. But once you sideload a non-"supported" app to the Fire, if it verifies through the Amazon appstore you are good to go.

So yes -- download an Amazon app with Amazon account X to any Android device that allows you to, and the .apk will work on any other Android, by sideloading it and having it check in with the Amazon appstore.

The issue with the backup you did was, that there was nothing wrong whatsoever except that Google Play was not installed on the Fire.

tl;dr

yes.

yes.

no -- yes.

You don't have to, you just need to do the original backup on the Amazon appstore-bought version.

Can't speak for all apps from the Amazon store, but those I've bought & backed up using Astro (Moon+ Pro and Mantano Premium) have worked perfectly.

no that is not right, the issue is that when you run any backup utility on the google tablet, it takes one look at the moon + pro app & says NOPE that is PROTECTED - I can't back it up.
I tried various backup & restore apps, but google tells me that the only way around that PROTECTED feature is to root the device.

I appreciate that even if I got past that issue, there'd be another issue of the app wanting to verify with google play servers, and not being allowed to talk to them, but the 1st issue is the real showstopper.

I had the same issue after buying the pro version of calibre cloud via Google store , but the developer kindly sent me an ad-free version to install on my Kindle after I explained the problem. In that instance the pro version was not in the amazon store, so buying via google was the only legal option.

It seems that amazon make a special effort to not sell pro versions of any epub related apps

They sell them just fine, provided the developer offers them in their store, they just block them as incompatible with Fire's.

OK but the net result is that same; even using two tablets there's no way to buy, backup, sideload.. in order to get a working pro version of a 3rd party epub reader onto the Kindle Fire
and clearly they lie about compatibilty because they allow the free versions to install & run OK

in these cases" not compatible" actually means - we don't want you to have this because it might be better than our own reader app !

As I already said. I've got both Moon+ Pro and Mantano Premium installed by buying from Amazon, installing on my Nexus 7 and backing up with Astro and sideloading to my Fire and so have others on this forum (as they're the ones who told me about it), Blossom is one other user who comes to mind.

So the key ingredient there is "buy from amazon" or use Astro, or is that that you have to do both ?
DO you, and others, have that process working with out-of-the-box non rooted devices ? & if so does that not blow away the whole PROTECTED app concept ?

when I check google store for "astro" I see various file mangers, but I don't see a backup utility as such,
can you give me a specific name or link to the Astro app that I need to put onto my Kobo tablet please

if I read the blurb for the 1st match - there is no mention of backup, so am I looking at the wrong app ?
ASTRO Cloud & File Manager is a FREE file explorer and has over 80 million downloads worldwide! ....
ah there is a mention after all:
built-in app backup & task killer

update: well I'm stuck.
I installed astro on the Kobo tablet, but i cant find where Moon reader & various other apps are stored, in order to try the backup process. I do have other paid-for apps on here that were bought from aamzon that I can test with, if i can find them - like the birds of britain app.

but I can't figure out the porcess for locating and backing up an app - can you help please
am I missing some obvious menu in the app for making backups, all I seem to have is the file explorer facilities, which presupposes an extensive knowledge of android folder structures & naming conventions ?

UPDATE :
duh - after a trip to developer website - I did not think of swiping left to right!

so I found the backup option, I backed up the birds of britain app that I bought from amazon OK, though I can't now see where it's put that backup file , so If i were wanting to copy it say to my dropbox or google drive I dont' see how, still.

I did see that the moon reader pro app was labelled "locked" so it's not going to back up any paid for app from google store - fair enough.

update 2: Ok I found the backup folder, with more help from google. I can see the backed up birds app.

so is this how protection works: the paid for amazon apps only run on a tablet registered to the account from which they were purchased ? but they will tun on and device if its compatible & so registered. whereas the google store apps have to be downloaded from play store ( which implies ytou are looged in) & they are then locked byt the android OS on that device.

well I almost bought the mantano premium from amazon store, now that I understand this side loading trick, but just in time I spotted that the release date on the version that amazon are selling is about 3 years behind the current version in the google store - and there's lots of review comments saying why is amazon always so far behind /why is this never updated.

stocking a really old version and trying to pass it off as current is arguably worse than not selling it at all.

Another example of where wanting to the right thing & pay for the product can leave you badly let down.
