@crutledge - the error doesn't tell me what format you were trying to convert to.

I had no problems converting to RTF and AZW3

Added : I just saw the other thread, I had no problems converting to LRF, or reading the LRF in calibre's ebook viewer from Windows Explorer Open or calibre GUI - calibre 2.5

I don't have a Sony or anything else on which to read the LRF

BR

For future reference calibre has a dedicated LRF viewer (lrfviewer.exe) separate from the standard calibre viewer. Unless otherwise configured the lrf viewer is used when any lrf file is viewed via calibre.

Thanks - I've often noticed lrfviewer.exe and dismissed it as irrelevant to me.

It's only because of crutledge's recent posts that I created an LRF, first one I ever had, and the dots didn't join.

Interestingly, in Windows LRF was associated with ebook_viewer.exe, I suppose I must have done that, but I can't recall doing so, and given I reinstalled Windows and everything else on to an empty SSD just 12 days ago... hmmm, biological memory faults?

I note that Prefs->Behaviour->Use internal viewer for->LRF is ticked, and that's the default

You are correct that is the default setting. The internal viewer for lrf is the lrfviewer. I just verified it and that setting uses the lrfviewer to open the lrf.

I have used ebook-viewer to view LRF and it works well. Maybe it's time to do away with lrfviewer since ebook-viewer works.

Why - is its presence doing you any harm? If you don't like the extra time, bandwidth. disk space etc to download and install it every week then... you know the rest.

Those with Sony Readers may want it to stay because it approximates their reader more faithfully that does the generic EPUB viewer. My understanding that Sony readers were to some degree the genesis of calibre.

So maybe it should be left as is - if for no other reason than it has heritage value. Perhaps it's buttons could be furnished with set of art-deco pngs, they currently use the same ones as ebook-viewer

If you really want to be faithful to how LRF looks, don't use Calibre's internal viewer but instead use Reader Library to view LRF.

About a year ago a neighbour handed me down a Sony PRS 500, I think that's what it is, I don't use it much. So if I really wanted see what an LRF looked like on Sony reader I'd copy the file to it

I think I'm right in saying that if I import a book into Reader Library it copies it to yet another ebook library that it creates in My Documents, without so much as a by your leave sir. I did install it, and I uninstalled it within 5 minutes of doing so -- as I've done with other similar programs from B&N, Amazon etc.

Sometimes when I think about ebooks I can't help but think... what if you needed different pairs of glasses to read the Guardian and Daily Telegraph, or different televisions to watch CNN and Fox, or if there were Ford Only and Lexus Only roads...

Australian states use three different railway gauges. Not so many years ago the trains from Sydney (New South Wales) to Melbourne (Victoria) changed their wheels at the border.

Why - well in the case of NSW and Victoria it was a means of restricting trade.

So the Silicone Valley walled gardens of the 21st century are merely copying the policies of 19th century Trade Protectionist colonial governors - i.e. 21st century corporate imperialism.
