What OS is this on? That error implies the preferred encoding on your system is ascii for some reason. Change it to utf-8 and you will be fine.

How do I change the preferred encoding?

No idea, I dont use macs. But a bit of ggoling should tell you how. Most likely you have to change some environment variable, probably LANG
