Gap in book numbers, please help!
I have 1,984 books and I was just about to edit and convert book number 1,985 when I saw that the book I deleted 20 min ago has made a gap in the numbers.
Quote:
Please help! Edit: I tried to add a new book and it automatically got added to my library giving it a book number. Can this be stopped? Can I just open the book in Calibre without it being added to my library with a book number automatically? Last edited by Engrish; 10-01-2014 at 10:13 PM. |

@Engrish - in a word - no
Those numbers are for calibre's internal use only, you shouldn't rely on them being contiguous or in any other way meaningful, or that they will even exist into the future. You can open a book file in the viewer by associating its file type (e.g. epub) with the book viewer program. How you do that will depend on which OS you use - Windows, OS/X or Linux. The book file can be anywhere - on your desktop, in your downloads folder, on a thumb drive etc in an email as an attachment BR Last edited by BetterRed; 10-01-2014 at 10:20 PM. |

![]() Regarding opening a book in calibre -- "calibre" is a library manager, opening it with calibre by definition means adding it to the database and managing it as part of the library. The Edit Book and Ebook Viewer programs bundled with calibre can be used standalone, without being tied to the library. However, they are not "calibre", they are "calibre's Edit Book" and "calibre's Ebook Viewer". Last edited by eschwartz; 10-01-2014 at 11:25 PM. |

Book number match the DB record you see in the GUI.
Many changes/adds to the Metadata cause a NEW number to be assigned. Numbers are NEVER REUSED, they are internal reference ONLY. BTW {id} is the template for that number You can always just open a book from the OS by using 'Viewer for all book formats' (ebook-viewer.exe) without adding to the Library |

They have given you reasons why it is so. If its really annoying you can make a new library and transfer all your books to it. The new library wont have any missing numbers in it but doing it every time you delete a book will be more hassle than its worth.
