First Time with Kobo Glo

Hey MobileRead,

I ordered a Glo, and it'll be here in a few days, and I was wondering if there's anything I should know, as a noob, about my new eReader?

I'm new here and don't know anything about eReaders and code, but I've seen people talking about registering with fake email addresses, disabling wifi, using special mods, filetypes, etc.

So far, all the books I have collected and intend to transfer to my Kobo are EPUBs.

Is there anything I should know as a first time user?

Personally, the only thing you really need to know is what book are you reading first. I would set it up, put a few books on it and go and read. While reading, play with the settings to see what you like. When you have read a bit and have some more familiarity with the device, you will be better equipped to look at the suggestions.

You do need an email address when setting it up. This can be real or fake. If you have any intention of buying books from Kobo, you should use a real address. But, you can always change you mind later. The device isn't locked to that address and you can change it later.

I love my Glo, I've had one since they launched and it's the best e-reader I've owned.

I second the use of Calibre, using it to sideload books will add the full cover images in your library and lock screen, as well as most of the metadata. I also have mine set up to create collections (shelves basically on the Glo) based on the tags, but I keep pretty tight control on them and use my own tags for sorting.

I'd wait on any of the hacks and patches around this forum until you're familiar with it, honestly I went years with just the stock firmware and it worked great, the hacks don't add any features I'd consider must-have.

Wireless syncing will eat like 5% of the battery, but with wifi turned off the battery will last months on a charge even with heavy reading.

Also Kobo has a bunch of contests and there's a thread with coupon codes that's usually kept up to date, though they don't work on all books (I think any that are agency pricing are excluded from coupons).

I think it's a great idea to start to get familiar with Calibre, and to start learning how to manage your shelves with Calibre. If you start by putting a lot of effort into organising things like shelves directly on your device, you may get a rude shock if you have to reset your device and lose all of that work. Setting up shelving (tagging/collections/whatever you'd like to call it) in Calibre means that you can very quickly and easily restore all your organisation with minimal effort.

There are also some terrifically useful plugins for Calibre: KoboUtilities, for example; and if you'll be buying DRM books, befriending Apprentice Alf can be helpful also.

YMMV. I'm a middle-weight reader, and I get less than a month (with wifi always disabled and using sleep.)

Ok, thanks everyone. I installed Calibre, it looks like it'll be really helpful.

Hmm, I consider myself a "heavy reader" compared to most of my friends, but on this site I'm probably more of a "light"! I figure about a half hour a day, on average. I've also never run it all the way down, as I plug it in at least every few weeks to transfer new books. But I don't think I've ever seen it drop below 50%, so I estimate well more than a month at that rate.

I'm a heavy reader, but I switch my device of choice around, I never let any of them get below about 75%

I consider myself a heavy reader and I read 2 to 3 hours each day. To figure out how many hours a full battery charge will last, I look at the Reading stats on the e-reader and and write down how many hours I've read. When my battery is wearing down I look at the stats again and do the math. Usually a full charge will last 40 to 45 hours using the light when necessary but having the wifi turned off.
