freezing after selecting bookmark
After my latest firmware update(3.8...) my Kobo Touch started to freeze upon returning to a bookmarked page selected from “ANNOTATIONS”.

After a short while the unit unfreezes and reverts to the homepage, at which point I have to reselect the book I was reading.

In addition, this latest firmware version does not have the option to individually delete/view .... bookmarks from the “ANNOTATION” function.

I have tried a factory reset, but the problem is still there.

Is this a problem with the latest firmware update

There is a problem with the dog-ear bookmarks and removing them after selecting them in the annotations list. But, I haven't seen anything with 3.8.0 quite like what you describe.

If you do a long press on the annotation in the list, a menu will be displayed. "Remove annotation" or "Remove highlight" should be on the menu.

It doesn't sound like a known problem with the firmware. Their could be a problem with database or the upgrade. I would do a check on the database in case of corruption. If there is, then log out and back in on the device. This will recreate the database, but it will need to be repopulated which can take time. But it is quicker than a factory reset. Also, you can take a copy of the database, and restore it afterwards if the logout doesn't fix things

Just spoke to Kobo Help Desk and they said that they seem to be having some freezing problems caused by the 3.8.x firmware that was release about a week ago. They are working on a fix, and it should be released in the next week or so.

Well I hope you got good information, but since there don't seem to be a lot of people reporting this Mobileread I'm thinking they gave you incorrect (or at least slightly off) information. My guess is they heard "bookmark" and jumped to your problem being the freeze on attempting to remove book issue.
As I said, I hope I'm wrong, but I'd be a little cynical about Kobo customer service on this one. Davidfor's answer might be the better one.

Dave: Thanks for your comments. I didn't know about the long press on the updated Annotation Bookmarks - that worked fine.

Seems my Touch is not only freezing upon using the "Annotation" function. Tonight it just froze while I was reading. As before, after a while it responded to buttons I had pressed earlier and upon waking up went back to the homepage.

All this only started happening a few days ago. Before that it had been working fine for 2 years. Because the Annotation Bookmark function had changed at the same time that this problem started, I assumed it was related to a firmware upgrade.

So I logged out and then logged back in (using USB connection) only to find that the Annotation Bookmark freezing problem is still there. Has there been a fix for that problem? Any idea why it just start after two years?

FYI, after I did the factory reboot, the % read went to zero and stayed there even as I continued to read. But after the logout/login procedure, that you recommended, the % read now shows the proper %.

I just tried my wife's Kobo and it's doing the same thing as mine. Both Kobo's were bought at the same time and have the same books. If it's not problem with the firmware update, why did both Kobos start having this problem at the same time?

That is strange. As far as I can tell, only you and your wife are seeing this problem. I definitely didn't with 3.8.0 and I can't think of another report here. So...

What firmware version do you actually have? Your first post says "3.8...". And you say "3.8.x" in your post about talking to Kobo support. Why do you say it like that? It is a typo? And don't say "the latest available". Because of the way Kobo releases firmware, "the latest available" depends on where you are and exactly what device you have.

Is it possible he's seeing the usual bug where trying to remove the bookmark from the tab in the corner takes him back to the homescreen, but he's got a few badly formatted epubs so it takes awhile for them to close and get back to the homescreen? Or a LOT of books on the reader that might cause a slowdown, or it's a much larger ebook again that would cause a slowdown which would seem like a short freeze? Or even a corrupt database?

This sounds like it, except I'm also getting some freezing/delayed response (but not reverting back to homepage) while reading.

I don't have alot of books on my Touch (around 25) - and none are especially large. That doesn't mean there isn't a corrupt file somewhere. I was thinking of deleting all the books on the unit, except the one I'm reading; or visa-versa.

Any comments?

To see if my data was corrupted I deleted all my books, from my account (Touch & PC) except for one that I am just starting to read and then did a Factory reset (by selecting Factory reset on my Touch. Is this the right way to do it?). Hopefully that will stop the freezing/delays, while reading, that started to recently.

I haven't done anything new to my wife's Touch (no pun intended). She still has all the same books that I had before doing this last Factory reset. As before, she has the bookmark/revert to homepage problem, but is not experiencing any freezing/delays while reading.

Still doing the same things (Freezing/delay and bookmark problem) as before I deleted all my books.

I'm also experiencing small problems on my Touch (N905C) with bookmarks/annotations.
When I tried to remove a bookmark after updating to 3.8 (didn't know about the long press then, found that out later) I suddenly got the square smiley face and 4 flashing blocks and was back at the main menu. Not really a freeze, but some glitch.

(just noticed that there is a number of reports about bookmarks in the 3.8.0 formware thread, like

by the way, I can bookmark and un-bookmark by touching the folded corner - without using the annotations list in between - but using the list and unfolding gives a 'reboot'.

No. When the H20 was announced, I was expecting a firmware to be released when the H20 was available. But, Kobo released 3.8.0 a few days later. I think that means we won't see one next week, but I would expect one before the end of October.
