How the García Girls Lost Their Accents by Julia Alvarez (Wikipedia) is an historical period-set coming of age multicultural literary fiction novel centred around the daughters of a Dominican refugee immigrant family fleeing a 50s dictatorship adjusting from their former wealth and status to a much lower standard of living, as well as encountering cultural differences and having to find their own way between the old world and the new, free courtesy of publisher Workman's Algonquin Books imprint.

This is a fairly major-ish modern Latin American literature work, which I actually own in paperback and read a long time ago and quite liked and highly recommend (and it also has a lengthy Wikipedia entry discussing the themes and so forth), so I'm really pleased to see it show up as a freebie and hope we get more such in the future from Algonquin as well.

I suspect this is a price-match to an iTunes promotion similar to that which recently appeared in the Canadian store and will probably not appear elsewhere.

Because getting one of my personal favourites which also happens to be a reasonably important and also excellent and enjoyable work in its particular genre as a freebie to share with you all (well, those of you who have a qualifying US store account or can fake it, at least) is simply awesometastic.

This is a major novel, by an important writer.

It's nice to get away from crawling zombies in zoot suits, and westerns with tobaccy-spittin' dudes who rarely change their underwear and socks - if at all.

Come to think of it, maybe there's no difference between these two genres.

If anyone's interested in further prize-winning Latin American literature, Alvarez's other reprint novels from Algonquin Books are couponable @ Kobo (at least in Canada).

Also, award-winning Mexican-American literary fiction novelist Cecile Pineda (Wikipedia), who's written another of my highly-recommended personal favourites, The Love Queen of the Amazon, currently has 5 of her works on sale for $2 or less in the Amazon The Big Deal Sale, good until October 5th, which I found and purchased via this post in arcadata's affiliate link thread so she would get the commission, by way of thanks for having alerted us to so many freebies over the years.

(I was kind of hoping it would be a multi-store promo like some of the other included publishers were doing and I could get ePubs via Kobo, but alas, this was not to be, and for less than $8 for 5 novels [some of them the award-winning ones], I'm willing to re-buy the ones I really like to encourage multi-store sales if they should drop later.)

TLQOTA is a quietly hilarious zany magical realism South American historical period-set romp with a firm dose of social satire (and also happens to have been a NYT Notable Book of the Year listee), which I've owned and enjoyed in hardcover for years, and for just $2 it's an incredibly good deal, IMHO.

(That said, I freely admit that my tastes in literary fiction are pretty idiosyncratic and tend decidedly towards the experimental and speculative, so YMMV and I advise checking out the sample first if you're more of a heart-warming human condition story sort of traditionalist.)
