Free (nook) In the Shadow of Lions [Xtian Tudor Reformation Historical Drama Novel]

In the Shadow of Lions: A Novel of Anne Boleyn by Ginger Garrett is her historical not-quite Exactly What It Says In The Title drama novel, because apparently according to the customer reviews, this has a bipartite story which involves some kind of parallel tale with a quote-unquote "woman of the streets", which I'm not sure whether to interpret as prostitute or just poverty, and is part of the Chronicles of the Scribes series dealing with major European history turning points (the other novel thus far is about the Black Death). But it's all obviously centred around Boleyn and her role in the Protestant Reformation and the establishment of the Church of England under Henry VIII, free courtesy of publisher David C. Cook.

Like the Reformation itself, apparently this novel is also divisive and polarizing in opinion, from the reviews which found it movingly entertaining, to the ones which found it too disjointed in storytelling technique, to the ones which disagreed with the author's interpretation of historical figures and events (I liked the review which claimed it was "full of filthy lies" but didn't bother to elaborate on exactly what the filthy lies were or what made them "deliberate" and "malicious", although that's probably not-too-offbase an assessment, given that others pointed out that it does seem to be applying a modern US-style Christian viewpoint to the situations of the past as well as mentioning assorted historical inaccuracies/liberties taken).

So YMMV. The author does include minor historical notes and a brief personal explanation in the back of the book.

Incidentally, this has previously been offered free in 2012, but I'm surprised it hasn't been mentioned on MR (although other prior freebies by the same author turned up on forum search), and since it seems to be a glitch freebie this time around, I might as well treat it as a new offering for the purposes of the daily thread count.

Incidentally, hat tip to the posters over at the B&N user forums for spotting this.

Currently free @ B&N (also UK).

ETA: Now also free @ For the dirt-cheap price of $0.01, you can get it at Amazon (available to Canadians & in the UK for one pence) & Google Play & ChristianBook (DCC ebooks are DRM-free there, incidentally). And iTunes (available to Canadians), and possibly other venues listed on the publisher's webcatalogue page, where you can watch some sort of video preview trailer.

I have no idea what's up with that, and maybe they officially drop to free later, maybe they don't and the price goes back up once someone over at DCC realizes they've glitched what's probably meant to be a standard discount sale promo.

And this has been the selected 3rd (non-repeat… -ish) free ebook thread of the day.

Because the late Tudor period is one of my favourites to read about in fiction and non-, and Anne Boleyn is one of my favourites of Henry VIII's queens (and much better than he deserved, IMHO), so even though this one probably takes an approach I'm not really going to care about to her story, it's still nice to get a novel about her free. Again.

(Or just really, really cheap, depending on where you choose to pick it up, if indeed you do.)

Enjoy!

Description
"I am the first writer, The Scribe. My books lie open before the Throne, and someday will be the only witness of your people and their time in this world. The stories are forgotten here, and the Day draws close. I will tell you one of my stories. You will record it."

So begins the narration of one such angel in this sweeping historical tale set during the reign of England's Henry VIII. It is the story of two women, their guardian angels, and a mysterious, subversive book—a book that outrages some, inspires others, and launches the Protestant Reformation.

The devout Anne Boleyn catches the eye of a powerful king and uses her influence to champion an English translation of the Bible—Scriptures the common people could read for themselves. Meanwhile, Rose, a broken, suicidal woman of the streets, is moved to seek God when she witnesses Thomas More's public displays of Christian charity, ignorant of his secret life spent eradicating the same book, persecuting anyone who dares read it.

Historic figures come alive in this thrilling story of heroes and villains, saints and sinners, angels and mortals ... and the sacred book that will inspire you anew.
